Tanush Kotian was initially not selected by any team for IPL 2024. The allrounder was part of the auction that took place in December 2023, but no team showed any interest in him, and he went unsold. Despite his recent performances, Kotian was snubbed for IPL 2024. However, this is not the first time Tanush Kotian has faced something like this. He had a similar experience during the IPL 2023 auctions.
After being a key player for Mumbai in their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 title triumph, Kotian seemed set to be picked by a team in the IPL auctions. The Indian allrounder even participated in trials for different teams and was happy with his performance. However, when the time came, no team bid for him, and he went unsold. Tanush Kotian spoke about the heartbreak he faced in the 2023 IPL auctions. He said:
“Mumbai was the winner of the 2022-2023 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and I was the Man of the match in the final against Himachal Pradesh. I had taken three wickets and hit a six in the final over to win the final match for Mumbai. I was confident that I would surely get into any of the IPL teams, but I was not picked. I kept thinking about it for a few days as to what I need to do now. There was disappointment, but I told myself that I do well in every match that I played from that point onwards, I will give my 100 percent in every match and perform well for the team.”
However, it seemed that luck was finally favouring him as despite not being selected by any franchise for IPL 2024, he got the chance to join Rajasthan Royals as a replacement for Adam Zampa. The Australian spinner was ruled out of IPL 2024 and Tanush Kotian was selected as the replacement. While he will find it very hard to make a debut for Rajasthan Royals this season, Kotian will be happy to just be a part of an IPL franchise.

In the 2022-23 Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Tanush Kotian’s bowling action was questioned by the umpire. One of his deliveries was reported by the match official. While it does not sound like a very big problem, this is what may have led to Tanush Kotian being snubbed during IPL 2023 auctions. Kotian spoke regarding this controversy. He said:
“It was in the 2022-2023 Mushtaq Ali Trophy when the match referee called me regarding one delivery, but I never got to see the clip of that delivery which he mentioned. After that I have played each and every game for Mumbai in the last two years, but my action has never been reported. That match referee called me for no reason and after that I am playing continuously but nothing has happened. I went to Chennai to get my action tested, but the test never happened because of some technical problem.”
Tanush Kotian has shown every aspiring cricketer exactly how you are supposed to act in the face of adversity. Despite being snubbed in the 2023 and 2024 IPL auctions, the player just concentrated on improving his game. His performance in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 has been phenomenal. He scored 120 not out in the Quarterfinal against Baroda and 89 not out in the semifinal against Tamil Nadu. In the final against Vidarbha, he picked up seven wickets in two innings and proved that he was equally useful in the bat and the bowl. Kotian ended up being the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 season Man of the Series.
Tanush Kotian IPL 2024 snub was heartbreaking for him. He spoke about getting subbed in the IPL auction and the mindset he keeps while trying to improve his game every day. He said:
“I got to know on the day of the auction that my action had been questioned. In fact, I had done reasonably well and was quite optimistic about getting a bid in the auction. I did feel for a while that the incident has pulled me back a step or two. It happens. Sometimes you go through a rough patch but if you keep working hard and keep performing, you will be rewarded at some point.”
Such a mindset is very refreshing to see, and after his performances in the Ranji Trophy, he is sure to get noticed even more. The allrounder picked up the Man of the Series award and will surely be rewarded for his hard work and perseverance sooner or later.
Tanush Kotian is just 25 years old. He has already started to make an impression thanks to his performances in the Ranji Trophy. He even made his debut for Rajasthan Royals in Indian Premier League 2024. The 25-year-old has a long career ahead of him and can develop into one of India’s finest.
Tanush Kotian made his Indian Premier League debut for Rajasthan Royals against Punjab Kings. Due to an injury to Jos Buttler, Kotian started the game and played as the opener alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. The youngster struggled on his debut making 24 runs in 31 balls, but he showed moments of brilliance, hitting three fours in his innings which eventually helped his team win the game against Punjab Kings.
