West Indies star Sunil Narine is arguably one of the most prominent spinners of the modern-day era. The right-arm spinner recently spoke with the media and revealed how he used to follow Muttiah Muralitharan’s bowling. Narine also shared that he tried to add variations to his bowling during his early days after looking at the legendary Sri Lankan spinner.
The WI star spoke how difficult it was for him to find role models in Caribbean for spin bowling as West Indies didn’t have spinners who were playing consistently at the time. He reveals it became a reason for him to start looking at Muthiah Muralitharan.
Speaking with Cricket Monthly, the West Indies spinner was quoted saying, “In the Caribbean it was tough. The more I bowled spin, the more I looked to Muthiah Muralitharan – he had the ball going both ways. But in the beginning, it was tough. West Indies didn’t have spinners who were playing consistently at the time; they would always play one-off games, where fast bowlers would dominate.”
He also goes on to mention how batting still remains his favorite aspect of the game. Sunil Narine added, “To be honest, batting was and still is, my favorite aspect of the game. Then the first game I played, I picked up 14 wickets in a four-day game. In Trinidad, people knew I could bat, but this was when I became Sunil Narine ‘the bowler’. That’s where I became a so-called” mystery” bowler.”

Speaking on his batting, the West Indies’ veteran praised former Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir. The former KKR captain gave Sunil Narine the chance to play as an opening batter during the 2017 edition of the IPL. The mystery spinner took the cricketing fraternity by storm when he started opened the batting for KKR. He ended up scoring 224 runs at a jaw dropping strike rate of 172.30 in the 2017 season after a talk with Gambhir.
The 34-year-old said, “Gautam Gambhir asked me to open. He wanted me to get the team off to a fast start; it didn’t matter if I lost my wicket early. Nobody could plan too much for me as I was still new to the role, the opposition didn’t take me that seriously, and I went from strength to strength. The more I performed well, the more confidence KKR had in me and gave me that encouragement.”
