Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has hit back at Virat Kohli claiming how the 33-year-old star should have gone on record and named the players who did not get in touch with him after he stood down for Test captaincy. The former India captain had decided to hand over the reins to Rohit Sharma after India’s Test series loss to South Africa earlier this year.
Recently, Virat Kohli stole the limelight by his comments during the post-match press conference after India’s narrow loss to Pakistan at the Super 4 clash of Asia Cup 2022. The Delhi based star went on to make a bold statement claiming that MS Dhoni was the only former player that he played with, who had messaged and checked up on him after he stepped down from captaincy in Test cricket. Kohli went to add how many people have his contact number, but no one messaged him apart from Dhoni.
Gavaskar shared his thoughts on Kohli’s comments while speaking to India Today and said how he is not aware of the dressing room situation in the Indian team. The legendary batter also claimed that the former India skipper should have ideally named the players who didn’t message him after he quit Test captaincy. The 1983 World Cup winner further went on to add how it would have been fair on those who wished him after he took the big decision.
“I don’t know what the dressing room inside situation was with all these other players, I think, ideally, if he is named one person who got in touch, maybe the other people who didn’t get in touch should have also been named. Then that would have been a little bit fair to everyone concerned rather than thinking everybody else didn’t get in touch with him,” Sunil Gavaskar said.

The 73 year old also went on to state that questions on the dressing room environment are ‘futile’. Sunil Gavaskar explained his thought by stating how no player will ever say anything against the captain and coach. He is quoted saying, “No, that I can’t say, that is his mindset, I am not a psychologist (Kohli still has captaincy thoughts?). I am just saying what I feel when I hear the comments coming about the current leadership. One of the most futile questions that I hear during an IPL Q and A session between the commentators and the Man of the Match asking about the current coach and the current captain.”
“Is that current player ever going to say anything against the current captain and coach? That’s a futile question. Nobody, anybody, who is mindful of his career, is going to cut his feet by saying something stupid about the current regime,” Sunil Gavaskar added.
