Sunil Gavaskar SAID THIS On Hardik Pandya Ahead Of T20 World Cup

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has shared his thoughts on Hardik Pandya ahead of the highly anticipated 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. The 27-year-old is set to participate in his third straight T20 World Cup since his debut with the former India opener expected a strong performance from Pandya down under.

Speaking of the all-rounder, Gavaskar went on to call Pandya as India’s trump card and claimed how he could replicate Ravi Shastri’s antics during the 1985 Cricket World Cup in Australia. The former India head coach had scored 3 half-centuries and ended up scoring 182 runs in 5 games. Under Sunil Gavaskar’s captaincy, Shastri went on to also claim 8 wickets while registering an economy rate of 3.32 as India advanced to the finals and defeated Pakistan in the tournament.

Speaking after India’s announcement of the T20 World Cup squad the ex-cricketer revealed his thoughts stating how Pandya could replicate Ravi Shastri at the ICC event next month. Sunil Gavaskar said, “Yes, I think he could possibly do what Ravi Shastri did in 1985 where Ravi was the outstanding performer with both bat and ball in the entire tournament. Some good catches as well. Hardik Pandya is capable of doing that.”’

The 1983 World Cup winner went on to add that Hardik Pandya’s fielding abilities in addition to his batting and bowling will provide the Men in Blue a competitive advantage at the ICC event. The 73 year old claimed, “Don’t forget, at mid-off, he affects some electrifying runouts as well. Direct hits at the bowler’s end, catching the batter inches short.”

“It’s not just the bowling and the batting aspects of Hardik Pandya, but the fielding aspect that could turn the game India’s way. I won’t be surprised if he is like the Ravi Shastri of 1985 if he is like the Champion of Champions,” Sunil Gavaskar added.

Hardik Pandya has been one of the most consistent performers in the shortest  format of the game in the last few months. The all rounder captained new Indian Premier League franchise Gujarat Titans to their maiden title in the first season itself.

He amassed 331 runs while recording a strike rate in excess of 140 in15 innings while also taking 12 wickets during the season. He has also been a solid player in the middle order of India’s national team in the T20 lineup and will see Rohit Sharma bank on him and will be a key cog for the Men in Blue Down Under.
