The Indian Women’s cricket team scripted history when they emerged victorious against England Women in the third and final ODI match. Women in Blue registered their first-ever clean sweep in ODIs against hosts when they recorded a 16 run victory. It was Jhulan Goswami’s last international game and played at the Lord’s Stadium on 24th September, Saturday.
However, all the attention on the game fell on Indian spinner Deepti Sharma, who claimed the last wicket. She got rid of Charlie Dean, running her out at the non-striker’s end. England needed 17 runs off 40 balls with just one wicket in hand. Both teams looked evenly poised with the game possibly heading either way. However, Sharma managed to run out Dean at the non-striker’s end and displayed a solid presence of mind with the batter miles away from the crease before the ball was bowled.
The run out did not go down with Stuart Broad and several former cricketers , who gave their opinion on the incident right after the match. The England pacer did not shy away from expressing his opinion and criticizing the Indian’s for ending the game in such a ‘terrible way’. Stuart Broad wrote, “A run out? Terrible way to finish the game. “ Apart from Broad, several other English cricketers in the likes of Nasser Hussain, Michael Vaughan, James Anderson and Sam Billings criticized Deepti for her actions.

Indian cricket fans went on to respond at Stuart Broad’s comment and reminded the right arm fast bowler about an incident back in 2013. The speedster was playing at Trent Bridge in Nottingham and had famously stood his ground and not walked off despite clearly nicking the ball to Michael Clarke at first slip in that Test match.

Ball took thick edge of bat.. clean catch taken by fielder and still batsman shamelessly stood on crease. What term you would use for this?https://t.co/dOHqQb9LaC

You literally stood your ground after a massive edge. That was horrible. Deepti Sharma did something well within the rules. What is this unreal hypocrisy?

Yeah, I know! Such a terrible way to get out, trying to sneak on the bowler like that and then be caught in the illegal act. After the Indian men, it’s the women who teach the English to play fair.https://t.co/lIsRAZVbSO

Despite the hate from Stuart Broad and other English players, Indian team captain skipper Harmanpreet Kaur backed Deepti for her actions. She supported said, “I thought you will ask about the first nine wickets because they were also not easy to take. I don’t think we have done something new. What I feel is, that shows your awareness of what the batters are doing. I will back my player because I don’t think she has done something which is not in the ICC rules.”
