Steve Smith Said THIS On His ‘Recovery’ Batting Ahead Of T20 WC

Steve Smith has claimed how he can still be a handy asset to the Australian national T20I squad despite finding himself in the bench during Australia’s first T20I against West Indies.  After getting a chance to play in the 2nd T20I, Smith failed to get going once again, scoring just 17 runs off 16 balls before losing his wicket to Alzarri Joseph.  The middle order batter feels that he can help the team during the highly awaited T20 World Cup while banking on his ability to run aggressively by pushing the ball for quite singles or doubles on the large grounds in Australia.

Smith had a poor outing in the recently concluded T20I series against India where he managed to register a strike rate of just 133.33, scoring just 52 runs in three games. Cameron Green on the other hand scored 2 fifties while at a strike rate of 214.54. It has resulted in a lot of pundits demanding the all-rounder ‘s selection in Australia’s T20I World Cup squad over Steve Smith.

Steve Smith comments on his batting

The former Australia captain claimed how there is a lot of depth and variety in the Australian batting unit. He also shared how that he was playing a recovery role for the team when there is a collapse by the top-order.

Speaking with the media in Brisbane, Steve Smith is quoted saying, “Just having that more attacking mindset rather than when I was playing that kind of (recovery) role, I was probably in a more defensive frame of mind and almost trying to bat through without taking the game on as much. But just having the license to go out and just play the way I want to play, and the situation that’s in front of me, I think that’s the way I play best.”

The 33-year-old revealed how he does not have the power game like some of his teammates’ but feels that his timing of the ball as well as ability to find gaps onto the field will be valuable to Australia, citing the large outfields.

“For me, I’m not as strong and powerful as some of the other guys. But some wickets entail just good smarts and punching the ball and timing the ball really well, particularly in Australia with big grounds, running hard between the wickets, that kind of thing,” Steve Smith added.
