Sri Lankan spinner Praveen Jayawickrama has been ruled out of the second test match after testing positive for Covid-19. The 23-year-old is all set to miss out on the final game of Australia’s tour to Sri Lanka with the clash scheduled to be played at the Galle cricket stadium.
The unavailability of Jayawickrama will be a major setback for the hosts who head into the 2nd Test after suffering a massive 10 wicket loss to the baggy greens. The previous 5-day game also saw Angelo Mathews being ruled out after he tested positive for Covid as well.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) released a statement that read,” Jayawickrama was immediately isolated from the rest of the team members and now will remain in room isolation for 5 days. Upon identification of Jayawickrama, the rest of the team members were subjected to a Rapid Antigen Test. All of them returned negative results.”
Apart from Jayawickrama, the remaining members of the hosts’ contingent have tested negative and will be eligible to play the last game. SLC will also be hoping to see Mathews make himself available for selection for the second Test. The former SL captain is set to complete his isolation period on Tuesday and has a possibility of making it into the playing XI..
In the absence of Jayawickrama, Sri Lanka has bolstered their spin attack. They have called up the likes of Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage and Lakshitha Manasinghe for the second Test match. All the three spinners are yet to play for their country in the longest format of the game. At least one of them is set to get a chance to take on the Australian batters in the last test match. It would be interesting to see who gets the chance to make his Test debut at the Galle on 8th July.
Sri Lanka was completely outplayed by Australia in the first Test at the Galle cricket stadium. The visitors managed to register a comfortable 10 wicket win, ending the game on the first session of the third day itself after chasing down the target of 5 runs. The hosts will be eager to turn their fortunes around when they square off against Australia from 8-12 July.
