Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is all set to pay tribute to the late Shane Warne during their first Test match against Australia. The first Test of the two-match series is said to be dedicated to the legendary leg-spinner. The hosts will see their players and fans stand to attention and give a fitting salute to the spin wizard before the first Test kicks off.
The former Australian cricketer is deemed to be one of the greatest leg-spinners of all time. Warne died of a heart attack in Thailand, after his friends found him to be unresponsive, while on vacation. He was on the island of Koh Samui with four friends who tried to save his life but failed to get any response. The whole cricketing fraternity was shocked at the news of the sudden demise of Warne, who bid the world goodbye in March 2022 at the age of just 52.

Sri Lanka Cricket has a special connection with Warne after the Aussie star came to their rescue in 2004. The spinner had made hefty donations for Sri Lanka when the country was heavily affected by the 2004 Tsunami. He was also seen visiting the affected areas and trying to help people, which made him a true friend of the islandic country.
A statement released by SLC read, “The Sri Lankan cricket establishment’s gesture is one of recognising Warne as a true friend of Sri Lanka who came to the country’s aid during the 2004 Tsunami devastation by personally flying over and visiting affected areas and making generous donations especially to homeless cricketers’ families. He did voice that he was concerned about the welfare of Sri Lankans affected and as much saddened by the devastation of the Galle Stadium.”

Warne’s family has also been invited to join in for the ceremony and come for the Sri Lanka vs Australia Test. The first match is all set to take place at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. The stadium was also the same venue where Warne became the first bowler to pick 500 wickets in test matches.
The highly anticipated two-match Test series of Australia’s tour to Sri Lanka is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 cycle. Both the games are set to be played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium itself. While the first clash is scheduled to begin on 29 June, the second Test will be played between July 8 to July 12.
