Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) saw the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 being moved from the islandic nation to the United Arab Emirates due to the economic and political turmoil in the country. The security and logistical concerns of organizing the 6-nation tournament seemed to be a big ask with problems like obtaining insurance, and issues with sponsors and broadcasters seeing SLC go ahead with a change in venue.
Following the decision to host the tournament in UAE, SLC Secretary Mohan de Silva spoke on the reasons as to why the country could not gain the stakeholders’ confidence. De Silva shared a media briefing and stated why Sri Lanka’s environment was unfavorable for Asia Cup 2022.
He said, “A tournament of this size requires stakeholders in addition to the member nations, such as broadcasters, sponsors, etc. They believed that the unfavorable publicity spread over the world due to the long lines for gas and other issues did not help our cause.”
Ashley de Silva, the CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket went on to how problematic it was for TV teams to visit the country citing security concerns. He also goes on to add how representatives of other countries were ok with the tournament being held in Sri Lanka, but the nation was not ready. The nation is currently experiencing a massive economic crisis due to poor fiscal management by the previous government with the country facing a food and fuel shortage.

The CEO of SLC said, “It was challenging for sponsors to obtain insurance, and it was problematic for TV teams to visit Sri Lanka because of security concerns. The representatives from the other nations wanted to go but were not ready to do so.“
de Silva added, “The Lanka Premier League, which was originally scheduled to start in the first week of August but was delayed owing to the current situation and will now take place in November, did not help Sri Lanka’s cause.”
He also said that, “The franchise sponsors were hesitant to visit Sri Lanka. A sponsorship agreement must allow the sponsors to travel freely throughout the nation in addition to funding the team. Sponsors attend events to promote their products, and they believed that at this time, this type of competition would not provide them with the necessary exposure.”
