Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) has opted against hosting the upcoming 2022 Asia Cup, which is scheduled to take place in August & September. The cricketing body is reported to have conveyed that message to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) forcing them to look at other potential venues to host the tournament.
Sri Lanka has been undergoing a major turmoil due to the political and economic crises in the country. It also led to the SLC postponing the Lanka Premier League (LPL) due to the crisis which has badly affected the islandic nation. Citing the same issues, SLC is not confident in their ability to host and take care of six teams for the 2022 Asia Cup.
An unnamed ACC source was quoted sharing news on Sri Lanka Crickets’ message alongside the future of the Asia Cup. He is quoted saying, “Sri Lankan cricket has conveyed that due to the existing political and economic situation in their country especially where foreign exchange is concerned it is not an ideal situation for them to host such a mega-event of six teams on the island.”
The source went on to add how there have been no replacement venues confirmed so far. UAE is expected to be in the front runners amongst the ACC’s choice to host the event. However, there has been no confirmation by the ACC source on any replacement being confirmed.

“UAE is not the final replacement venue, it could be some other country, even India as the ACC, Sri Lanka cricket will first have to talk with Emirates Cricket Board officials to get final approval for the event,” the source said. The Asia cup usually follows an ODI 50- over game format but is set to be played in a T20 format this time around. It is only the second time that the tournament will be played following the shortest format of the game.
The decision was taken with the mindset of helping teams prepare for the highly anticipated International Cricket Council’s (ICC) T20 World Cup in Australia. The upcoming ICC event is scheduled to be played in October-November, right after the Asia Cup.
