Shubman Gill on Wednesday became the latest Indian cricketer to score a double century in One Day Internationals. The 23-year-old smashed 209 off 149 balls in the first ODI against New Zealand. He has scored his second century in succession after registering his maiden ODI ton against Sri Lanka at Thiruvananthapuram. The young batter is also the fastest Indian cricketer to complete 1,000 runs in the 50-over format. He managed to reach the feat in 19 innings, surpassing the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli.
Gill, who made his debut in ODI just three years back in January 2019, also finds himself alongside the likes of Pakistan’s Imam Ul Haq. The under-19 World Cup winner is joint second-fastest to 1000 runs, with Fakhar Zaman sitting at the top, having breached the four-figure mark in 18 innings.
The Indian opener now finds himself in elite company after he managed to breach the 200-figure mark in One Day Internationals. He is the latest Men in Blue star to reach the landmark, with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan scoring 200 before the Punjab-based cricketer.
It is also worth noting that Kishan got to his 200 just a few months before Gill, with the wicketkeeper scoring 210 against Bangladesh. The aggressive approach taken by Indian cricketers in the One-Day format cannot be dismissed, with fans starting to relate India’s batting to New Zealand’s Bazball.

The Sharma-led Indian cricket team managed to set a target of 350 runs or more on two back-to-back occasions. The first instance came in their final ODI against Sri Lanka, with the latest one coming against the Kiwis in Hyderabad.
Shubman Gill’s double ton could well see him cement his spot in the Indian cricket team for the highly anticipated ODI World Cup, with the upcoming ICC event scheduled to take place in India and kick-start in November. The 2011 World Cup winners will be eager to lay their hands on the coveted trophy once again, with Indian fans waiting for well over nine years to win an ICC event.
Sharma’s men are yet to win any major tournament at the international level since their Champions Trophy triumph in 2013. It remains interesting to see if India can reclaim their glory and establish their authority as one of the best white ball teams in the world.
