The Indian cricket team faced England in Shubman Gill’s first game in charge as the Indian Test captain, which took place from 20th June to 24th June 2025. This was India’s first Test match since Veteran Indian stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the Test format of the game. All Indian fans were both nervous and excited to see how the new Indian team would fare in the Test match against England with Shubman Gill at the helm. Their performance would speak a lot about India’s future in Test cricket with this new team. While India played well, they still ended up losing, and this article talks about Shubman Gill reflecting on this loss.

The Indian cricket team batted first in this Test match and did so brilliantly. Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 runs in 159 balls), Shubman Gill (147 runs in 227 balls), and Rishabh Pant (134 runs in 178 balls) all managed to score centuries, and KL Rahul did decently well to help India score 471 runs in the first inning. However, good performances by Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Harry Brook saw England retaliate brilliantly, and they managed to score 465 runs before India could bowl them out, meaning India led by just six runs despite batting so brilliantly in the first inning.
However, India did not get discouraged, and KL Rahul (137 runs in 247 balls) and Rishabh Pant (118 runs in 140 balls) scored centuries in the third inning to boost India’s score once again. However, just like in the first innings, India’s lower order failed to contribute at all, and India could only set a target of 371 for England to try to chase down. Each of Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Jamie Smith played brilliantly, and England was able to chase this score down in the final session of the final day, handing Shubman Gill his first loss as a captain. The Indian skipper reflected on this loss in the post-match conference.

Shubman Gill said:
“It was a brilliant Test match. We had our chances, we dropped catches and our lower-order didn’t contribute enough, but proud of the team and overall a good effort. Yesterday, we were thinking around 430 odd and declared, but we lost six wickets for 25 runs Unfortunately, we didn’t score runs at the end which always makes it difficult. Just didn’t go our way in this match. That was something we spoke about. It happened so quickly. Could be one of those things we have to rectify in the upcoming matches.”
Yashasvi Jaiswal was one of the players severely under the gun after India’s loss as he dropped multiple chances throughout the Test match, and many credited the loss to Jaiswal. Gill spoke about the missed chances and said that India needed to improve, but they also defended the young team. Shubman Gill said:
“We had our chances in the match, but overall really proud of our effort!”

“Definitely, chances don’t come easy on wickets like these. It’s a young team, learning one and hopefully we will be able to improve on those aspects. The first session we were quite spot on, didn’t give away many runs. It’s hard to stop the runs once the ball softens. Unfortunately, some edges didn’t go our way. They took their chances after the ball got old. That happens in a game of cricket. You expect that everything won’t go your way.”
Shubman Gill’s India has started the new era of Indian Test cricket with a loss, and while they need to think about where they can improve, it is also important that they look at the positives. Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and KL Rahul all looked phenomenal with the bat, and while Yashasvi Jaiswal had a bad day in the field, he managed to score a century as well. Shubman Gill will now need to handle this situation and figure out how to get his team to improve on their weaknesses while also carrying forward their strengths into the second Test against England so that India can start making a comeback in this five-match series.
