Indian middle order star Shreyas Iyer spoke about the tension in the dressing room as the Men in Blue recorded a thrilling win over West Indies on Sunday. The 27-year-old decided to focus on the lighter side of the situation as the visitors chased down 311 with just two balls to spare at the Queen’s Park Oval.
Cricbuzz has quoted the Indian batter speaking on the atmosphere in India’s dressing room during the final few overs of the 2nd ODI. Shreyas Iyer said, “It was fun, to be honest. We were all sitting together, and Rahul sir was getting very tensed; he was consistently passing on the message.”
The 27-year-old, who scored his second successive half-century of the series also commented on his 99-run partnership with Sanju Samson. He said, “It was a crucial partnership. We lost two back-to-back wickets. We were 60 for 3 (79/3), and from there, we had to rebuild. I knew what I was going to do, and Sanju at the same time, faced a few balls, and then he went after the spinners. He hit them for two sixes, and suddenly, the momentum shifted towards us. We built on the partnership and carried forward the momentum.”
Iyer also expressed his displeasure upon the manner of his dismissal despite playing a key role in India’s’ win on Sunday. He goes on to add that it’s important to convert such scores into a century while sharing how it is difficult to get such starts every time.
The batter said, “I was really happy to get to what score I got today. But I was unhappy with the way I got dismissed. I thought that I could have taken the team through easily and set up the total, but I was very unfortunate with the way I got out.”

Shreyas Iyer added, “Really fortunate to get to consecutive half-centuries. But I should have converted it into a century. You don’t get such kind of starts every time in international cricket. The more you convert your fifties into hundreds, the better it is. Today was a golden opportunity for me to convert my innings. Hopefully, I will be able to score a century in the next one.”
The 27 year old got the opportunity to bat at no 3 in the ongoing series with Virat Kohli rested for the tour. Shreyas Iyer has walked in after the fall of 1 wicker quite often in domestic cricket and even in the IPL. However, he is seen batting lower positions for India, with Kohli slotting No.3. It remains interesting to see if his position might be shifted upon Kohli’s return while questions also arise if Iyer can retain a spot in the XI despite solid outings.
