Angkrish Raghuvanshi just missed out on a century, departing having made 92 runs in 124 balls. The fall of Rahane’s wicket served as a gateway for a brilliant partnership between Siddhesh Lad and Shreyas Iyer. While the ex-Kolkata Knight Riders captain has now lost his wicket, Siddhesh Lad continues to play, currently having made 165 runs in 331 balls. Iyer, on the other hand, decided to play at a faster pace and broke his career-best score.

Shreyas Iyer scored a double century against Odisha and departed, having made 233 runs in 228 balls at a strike rate of 102.19. Not only did he manage to make a massive score, but he did so while striking at a good pace, ending his innings with 24 fours and nine sixes. This batting display was a joy to watch for the fans who have recently been deprived of high-scoring games, especially in the Test series between India and New Zealand, which saw the Kiwis whitewash India at home for the first time in history.

This performance by Shreyas Iyer has made the fans question whether he deserves a place in India’s Test squad ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series against Australia. While it is unlikely that India will change their plans and try to incorporate Shreyas Iyer in the team on such short notice, given their shocking performance against New Zealand, anything is possible, and it will not be too surprising if the Indian cricket team make the shock call of calling up Shreyas Iyer for the BGT series.

The Indian cricket team’s batting was exposed very badly against New Zealand in the recent Test series. In fact, only Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar can be given credit for their displays in the Test series against the Kiwis. The Men in Blue struggled to maintain any kind of consistency. If Shreyas Iyer can keep performing like this and build his image as a player who can provide stability to the squad, it will become likely that sooner or later, he will get the chance to prove himself in India’s first squad.

While the Indian cricket team has players like KL Raul on the bench who can come in and make an impact, he also does not seem to be in the best of form and failed in the match between India A and Australia A ahead of the BGT series. It will be a very tough and impromptu call if India decides to take Shreyas Iyer to Australia, but given the condition the Indian cricket team is in, it is not out of the realm of possibility.
