Shikhar Dhawan is expected to take charge of the Indian cricket team once again with the veteran batter rumored to be named captain for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. The 3-match ODI series is set to kick start on October 6 with the first game in Lucknow. Ranchi and Delhi are named as hosts for the second and third ODIs, which are scheduled to be played on 9 and 11th October respectively.
After a poor outing in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022, the Men in Blue are set to play three T20Is and ODIs each against South Africa. The first T20I game will happen at Thiruvananthapuram on 28th September with the second T20I being played on 2nd October in Guwahati, followed up with the 3rd T20I at Indore, two days later.
According to ANI, the ICC T20 World Cup-bound players are likely to be rested for the ODI series against South Africa resulting in the captaincy being handed over to Shikhar Dhawan. It is also being reported that Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid could also skip the white ball series with NCA chief VVS Laxman expected to take charge and coach the team.
Despite not being in the scheme of things for the shortest format of the game, Shikhar Dhawan is a crucial part of the national team when it comes to the 50-over format. Recently, the opener led them to a clean sweep 3-0 win against the West Indies in ODIs.
Questions will remain upon the Indian team selection for the upcoming ODI series against the Proteas. It remains interesting to see if Virat Kohli is recalled to the ODI set up for the 3 matches series against South Africa. The former Indian skipper had struggled to bat in the recent past but has been in great touch in Asia Cup 2022.
