Former India and strength and conditioning coach Shankar Basu who currently works with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), recalled his conversation with Rishabh Pant during his early days in international cricket. The RCB coach spoke on a YouTube channel sharing how he had complimented the young wicketkeeper-batsman on being an extraordinary gymnast.
Shankar Basu recalled India’s matches in the Nidahas Trophy recollecting how Pant was then seen as a youngster in the team. The 53-year-old went on to claim how impressed he was at seeing Pant’s gymnast skills. Speaking on Ranveer Allahbadia’s YouTube channel BeerBiceps, Basu said, “I remember seeing Rishabh in Sri Lanka. He came to the Nidahas Trophy and before in the West Indies. In the Nidahas Trophy, I remember telling him that you know you’re an extraordinary gymnast. “
He also spoke about Pant’s reaction as the wicket batter was shocked to hear compliments about his gymnast skills. Shankar Basu added,” Please call your gymnastics coach and thank him for what you are doing now. He was like ‘What?’. He was flummoxed. He can do a kip-up, front flip, and backflip. You must have seen it on television. And he has got that explosive ability because of that.”

The 53 year old goes on to add how he feels that gymnastics has helped Pant a lot in his early years. He goes on to share how gymnastics can ensure good athletic development for a player. Shankar Basu said, “I think he has done a lot of gymnastics in his formative years. Same thing with Sridharan Sriram’s son. He wanted to start training. I said ‘Sriram, put him in gymnastics, and apparently, he is playing very well now.”
The RCB coach goes on to mention, “Gymnastics plays a major role in the development of an athlete. Not all of them will get the opportunity to do that, but if you are able to from a very young age, nothing like it.”
Rishabh Pant is currently a member of the Indian squad that is competing against West Indies in a five-match T20I series. The 24-year-old featured in the first game and is expected to play all the remaining matches as well. Following the conclusion of the T20I series, Pant has been rested for the upcoming ODI matches against Zimbabwe. The young wicketkeeper-batsman is later expected to come back to the team for the highly anticipated Asia Cup 2022.
