Pakistan speedster Shaheen Afridi was named in the Men in Green’s upcoming T20 squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup in Australia. The young pacer, who missed the Asia Cup due to injury has not played much cricket for quite some time due to a knee injury. However, he is all set to make a comeback to competitive cricket and join the national team for the marquee global event in Australia which brought a lot of rejoice to the cricket fans in Pakistan.
Despite missing out in featuring from Asia Cup 2022, Shaheen Afridi was travelling with the team during the initial stages of the 6-nation tournament. Later, the 22-year-old flew to the UK for his rehabilitation. Amid his recovery, Afridi passed some comments which saw cricket fans slam the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) with the pacer saying how he was bearing all the expenses.
Ex cricketer Shahid Afridi spoke to Samaa TV during a recent interview and revealed that Shaheen flew to England all by himself and had to manage the stay from own expenses with the PCB not paying for any of it. He was quoted saying, “He has flown out to the UK on his own ticket, he is staying there on his own money, I arranged a doctor for him there, he contacted him there, the PCB is not doing anything in all this. As far as I know, he is doing everything about staying there and coordinating with doctors.”
Shahid Afridi’s comments led to PCB approaching Shaheen Afridi and reassuring him while claiming that all the expenditures will be covered. It also led them to release an official statement on Thursday and announce their decision to the public.
The official PCB statement read as, “The PCB is also pleased to advise and update that Shaheen Afridi is making excellent progress in his rehabilitation in London and is on track to make a full recovery in time for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Australia 2022. It goes without saying that the PCB has always been and will continue to be responsible for arranging medical care and rehabilitation of all its players requiring any treatment.”
