Star Indian batsman KL Rahul has been missing from action for quite a while with the opener last featuring in the Indian Premier League. After captaining Lucknow Super Giants in their maiden IPL campaign, the stylish batter missed out on competitive cricket due to health and injury concerns.
The 30-year-old had to undergo a sports hernia surgery back in June which ruled him out for over 8-12 weeks. He was later seen working on his recovery and rehabilitating at the NCA in Bangalore. Rahul was scheduled to join up with the Indian team for the T20I series against West Indies. However, the batter tested positive for Covid-19 which ruled him out of the ongoing series against the Caribbean outfit.
KL Rahul’s absence from cricket has seen the Indian team undergo a massive transformation. The team has been opting for an aggressive batting approach in the recent past. The competition for places has also grown with many players eyeing a berth in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup and subsequently the ICC T20 World Cup.
Citing all the changes, former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris spoke on the mind set and competition in the Indian team. He said, “It’s a different mindset for players because they don’t want to be out and they don’t want to be giving other players opportunities.”
Styris added, “I know India has a very good culture within its group, so it doesn’t mind allowing other players opportunities all the time. I know as a player myself, you never wanted to give somebody else a chance to take your spot.”

The 47-year-old spoke on SPORTS18’s daily sports news show ‘SPORTS OVER THE TOP’ and shared how KL Rahul might find it difficult to get back in the playing XI. Scott Styris also went on to speak on the batting performances of Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant. He shared how the duo has an aggressive approach and which sees them being focused on hitting boundaries as soon as they walk in to bat.
The former NZ star went on to question if such strong performances will make the selectors think about the need of KL Rahul. Scott Styris said, “So with the fact that he’s out injured and he’s away from the team at the moment, it just means that other players are able to do what Suryakumar is doing, what Rishabh Pant is doing, getting in there, taking the chance scoring runs.”
“They really posing the selectors some questions saying, do we actually need KL Rahul? Is he going to be in good form when he comes back? He has missed a lot of cricket, a lot of question marks now present themselves just because he’s been able to give other players that opportunity,” Scott Styris added.
