The India cricket team suffered a major blow just a few weeks before the Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 as star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the ICC event due to an injury. The Saurashtra based cricketer suffered an injury to his knee during the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022 in the United Arab Emirates.
Jadeja’s absence can be seen as a massive setback for Team India with the all-rounder providing a much-needed balance in the playing XI. He is a crucial part of the national team set up across all three formats of the game and his unavailability at the ICC event will be a major miss for the Men in Blue.
Speaking about the void left by Ravindra Jadeja, Team India skipper Rohit Sharma has gone on to claim that it is very difficult to fill the spot. However, the 35-year-old has gone on to back his like-for-like replacement, Axar Patel, to get the job done.
Patel is a left-handed bowling all-rounder, just like Ravindra Jadeja and is known to have shown some glimpses of great talent in the past. He has displayed the ability to go on and win matches with the bat as well as the ball, depending upon the situation.

Speaking with the media in the press conference ahead of the three-match T20I series against Australia, Rohit Sharma said, “We needed an all-rounder there because Jadeja was a big miss for us. Axar was always a part of our plans. It was always going to be between Axar and Ravindra Jadeja because they do similar things. Since Jadeja is not available, we were quite clear that Axar is the guy who can do the job for us.”
Sharma referred to Axar’s antics in the second ODI against West indies which saw the all- rounder smash 64 runs from 35 balls and lead India to victory. He also revealed how the left-arm spinner can bowl in all three phases of the innings.
“Recently, if you saw in the West Indies, he batted brilliantly, won the game single-handedly. He is a three-phase bowler; he bowls in the powerplay, middle-overs, and possibly an over at the death if you want to take advantage of the larger boundary,” Rohit Sharma added.
