Rohit Sharma has come out to defend Virat Kohli after the former India captain was critiqued upon his poor run of form against England. Despite getting off to a good start, the 33-year-old could manage only 11 runs in the third T20I match while facing the Three Lions.
Kohli joined hands with the Indian skipper after Rishabh Pant was sent back to the hut. He started off with a single before taking on English speedster David Willey. The right-handed batter smashed him for 2 back-to-back boundaries before being outdone on the very next ball.
Interacting with media at the end of the game, the Indian skipper spoke on the aggressive approach Kohli played with during his short stay at the crease. Sharma said, “It’s a bit of both. We, as a team, we want to play in a certain way, and every player needs to buy into that thought process. Otherwise, you know, it’s not gonna happen for you. And all the players, all the batters, who are part of this squad, are willing to take that extra risk and go and see what extra they can do with the bat.”
The 35-year-old opener went on to share his thoughts on the game. He also spoke on the teams’ mentality during batting in the shortest format of the game. Sharma shared, “The T20Is that I’ve seen, especially when you’re chasing a squad like that and you come out and bat the way he (Kohli) did it, it shows the quality of a batsman. Honestly, we were three down and we wanted to dig in, get that partnership going and bat as long as possible. He pretty much did everything right today. Just slightly disappointed that it couldn’t be right till the end, but nothing takes away from that kind of knock.”

The opener added, “You don’t get to see that every now and then. So, we will take that with both hands as a team and I’m pretty sure about him as well. He’ll be very happy with how we responded to that situation where he went to bat in.”
Kohli has not been at his best in India’s ongoing tour to England. After failing to make any impact in the rescheduled Test, he was rested for the first T20I. Coming back into the team for the second game, Kohli scored just one run before being set back to the hut.
The right-handed batter will be eager to get back to his best in the remaining white ball matches. India is set to take on the Three Lions in three One Day Internationals after the conclusion of the T20I matches. Kohli will look at these 50-over games as a great opportunity to find his touch with crucial tournaments coming up for the Men in Blue.
