Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has heaped high praise on Indian star Suryakumar Yadav for his recent outings. The 47-year-old, who coached Mumbai Indians spoke on the transformation of the middle order batter, who finds himself ranked 2nd in amongst batters in ICC Men’s T20I Rankings. Ponting goes on to reveal what changed Yadav’s career and revealed how the IPL graph heavily impacted the player’s breakthrough in the Indian national team.
The 2003 World Cup winner went on to claim that a move to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for Suryakumar Yadav in the Indian Premier League (IPL) worked out quite well for the right-handed batter. Yadav, who earlier featured for Mumbai Indian played 4 seasons with the Men in Gold and Purple and featured in their middle order.
Citing his growth as a player at KKR, Mumbai Indians decided to rope him back into the team during the IPL auction in 2018. Since then, Suryakumar Yadav has continued to shine for the team with his performances in IPL 2020 leading up to a much awaited call up to the national team.
Speaking on ICC Review the former Australia skipper said, “When I was in Mumbai, he (Suryakumar Yadav) was an 18-19 year old kid, a young man. He was in our squad not quite getting a game. The year after I left, he was traded to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) where his career started to turn around.”

“He got a bit of an opportunity in the middle order and then MI bought him back in the auction and has been a match-winning player for them for five or six seasons now, to the point that he is one of their retained players,” Ricky Ponting added.
The 47 year old concluded by saying, “Anyone who has seen him (Suryakumar Yadav) from a young age, knew that he had an abundance of talent. The more he has played, the more he has learned about himself, the more different situations he has found himself in a game, he has found a way to not just survive, but thrive in the IPL at an international level.”
