Ricky Ponting Says He Was Desperate To Work With Shreyas Iyer

When the IPL 2025 mega auction came around, Punjab Kings, on the advice of Ponting, decided to push hard for Shreyas Iyer and ended up buying him in the auction for a whopping ₹26.75 Crore. This means that Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting will be reunited during IPL 2025, and they will hope to make the best of their relationship.

Ricky Ponting spoke about being reunited with Shreyas Iyer and said he is looking forward to working with the Indian star. He said:

“I was desperate to work with Shreyas again. We had a great working relationship in Delhi over a long period of time. He’s one of the best players that I’ve worked with. He’s a great human being. He’s an IPL-winning captain. You couldn’t ask for much more. He’s only joined the camp a couple of days ago. So he’s starting to make his mark on the team as a captain and as a leader. Shreyas Iyer also spoke about working with Ricky Ponting during the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League. He said:

“He supports everyone. When I worked with him for the first time in the past, he made me feel like I am a great player and I can easily excel in this format. The confidence he gives a player is of a different level. The goal is to win the trophy; that’s our mindset right now, and it’s a step-by-step process; it’s not like you wake up in the morning and do it, but the way we’re practising right now and the way we’re sharing our wavelength and camaraderie with each other, it’s going really well.”

Ricky Ponting also spoke about the Punjab Kings’ struggle while playing at home and how they need to start winning their home matches to have any hope of winning the Indian Premier League title. He said:

“What I understand is that if you are not winning at home, you are not winning the IPL. It’s one of the main reasons that I’m sitting here now. I wanted a really strong coaching challenge. And we’ve got that. But there’s no pressure on us. What have we got to lose? (having never won). We’re going to go out and play a really dynamic and entertaining brand of cricket. And I know we’ve got the players that can do that.”

Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer have worked successfully in the past, but the entire world will be fixated on their performances for Punjab Kings in the future.
