The Men in Green suffered a major blow when Shaheen Afridi was ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup 2022. Earlier, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) released a statement confirming a right knee ligament injury to the pacer which ruled him out of the continental tournament on 20th August.
The 22-year-old had suffered from the injury while fielding during Pakistan’s first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Following the injury, Shaheen Afridi has been asked to rest for nearly 4-6 weeks by the PCB Medical Advisory Committee.
Despite being injured and completely ruled out of the Asia Cup 2022, Shaheen Afridi has traveled with the Pakistan squad to UAE. He is a member of the Men in Green squad that is currently staying in Dubai. Earlier, the 22-year-old had also accompanied the team during their tour to the Netherlands.
A PCB spokesperson has revealed why the left-arm pacer is a part of the Pakistan contingent which is in the United Arab Emirates. He went on to add how team skipper Babar Azam wants the young pacer to stay with the team with the Men in Green think tank also hoping to closely monitor the players’ recovery and progress.
The spokesperson is quoted saying, “Babar wanted him to stay with the team. Management wants to closely monitor his injury rehab. He (Shaheen Afridi) will be staying in Dubai itself with the team.” The 22-year-old was recently seen meeting various members of the Indian team squad. He interacted with the likes Yuzvendra Chahal, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant as well as KL Rahul while wearing knee braces over his injured leg.

Babar Azam’s side rode on the Afridi’’s performances to record a magnificent 10 wicket win over the Men in Blue last year.

Pakistan will miss the the 22-year-old’s services for the tournament. They are all set to take on their arch-rivals India in their first game which is scheduled to be played 28th August. While India would look to take a revenge on last years’ embarrassing defeat, the Men in Green would look to replicate their dominating performance this time around as well.
