Former national team head coach Ravi Shastri has questioned the India team’s squad selection for the ongoing Asia Cup 2022. Many serious questions were raised on the Men in Blue squad for the ongoing 6 nation tournament, especially after the loss against Sri Lanka.
Rohit Sharma’s men tasted a second successive loss in the tournament after playing out a narrow defeat to Sri Lanka in the Super 4 stages. It was the second instance which saw the Rahul Dravid coached side failing to defend over 20 runs in the last two overs of the game. Citing the issues, ex Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri has questioned why Mohammed Shami was not a part of the T20I side, especially in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.
Shami has been overlooked to be a part of the national team squad for the shortest format of the game since the T20 World Cup last year. He has not been selected despite showing great form which saw him play a big role for Gujarat Titans as the Hardik Pandya led side emerged victorious in IPL 2022.
Speaking on Star Sports, the 1983 World Cup winner claimed how the Indian squad selection for the Asia Cup could be better. The 60-year-old felt that the Indian Cricket board should have added one more speedster in the team traveling to UAE for the tournament.
Ravi Shastri also went on to state that Shami should have been selected after the pacer had a great outing in the Indian Premier League. He also goes on to speak on how the speedster can bowl at ferocious pace and could have been used to good advantage by the Indian team.

He is quoted saying, “When you need to win, you got to prepare better. I think the selection could have been better, especially for the fast bowlers. You know the conditions here. There’s not much in it for the spinner. I was quite surprised that you came here with just four fast bowlers (including Hardik).
“You needed that extra one… someone like Mohammed Shami sitting at home and cooling his heels baffles me. After the IPL he had, for him not to be able to make the cut is… Obviously, I’m seeing something different,” Ravi Shastri added.
