Ravi Shastri Claims THIS To Happen If IPL Was There In 1980’s

Former Indian Team head coach Ravi Shastri claims that he could have pocketed millions if the Indian Premier League (IPL) was introduced during his playing days. The former middle order batter shared that he would be earning a lot if there was an IPL auction in the 1980s.

The Indian Premier League has been a marquee tournament in the international calendar since its inception in 2008. It has gone on to be bigger than ever before with the addition of two new teams in the 15th edition of the tournament in 2022.

Ravi Shastri, was known to be one of India’s most valuable all-rounders during the 80s. The former India head coach has played over 80 Tests for the Men in Blue scoring 12 fifties and 11 centuries and picked up 151 wickets. He has also played in 150 ODIs amassing 18 half-centuries alongside 4 hundreds with 129 wickets in the format.

While speaking to former cricketer Kris Srikkanth, Shastri shared how he felt that he would have been a captain of an Indian Premier League (IPL) side and earned millions at the auction. The on-air conversation took place on Fan Code during India’s 1st T20I match against the West Indies.

Shastri said on-air, “I mean IPL, had it been in our times, you would have been captaining one side, I would have been captaining one side. No question about that. And at least a couple of millions in the auction, that is most important.”

Srikkanth was heard bursting into laughter upon Shastri’s statement. He later went on to cross question the Indian team head coach on what he thought would have happened with the likes of Kapil Dev and Viv Richards. Srikkanth asked, “Just imagine Kapil Dev and Viv Richards, Ravi. What would happen to them?”  Shastri replied, with “That would have been fun.”

This is not the first time Shastri has spoke about a what-if scenario surrounding the Indian Premier League. While speaking to ESPNcricinfo in March 2022, the 60 year old shared how much he would have gone for in an IPL auction. The former India head coach had replied to the question by saying, “Comfortably in the 15-crore bracket. Comfortably! And captain of the side. No question. It’s a no-brainer.”
