Former Indian Cricket Team head coach Ravi Shastri has opened up about the major problem in the current national setup. He has gone on to share how India is missing genuine all-rounders and part-time bowlers in the team. The Men in Blue have struggled to find consistent performing all-rounders over the last few years.
There also has rarely been any part-time bowler being selected as a member of the national team in the recent past. While the Indian cricket team has 2 solid all-rounders in the likes of Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja, the duo has often been sidelined due to injury issues.
Shastri spoke on India’s problems while sharing how the previous national teams had several part-time bowlers which helped in maintaining the balance of a team. The former Indian team coach shared his thoughts while doing commentary on the ongoing India vs West Indies ODI series.
Speaking on air with FanCode, Shastri said, “There were Sehwag, Sachin, Yuvraj, Raina. But in the past 3-4 years, you had nobody. So, the whole balance of the side was compromised. So, it was good to see someone like Axar and Hooda in your side. They can bowl, they can bat.”
The 1983 World Cup winner also claims that lack of good communication between the captain and selectors is a major reason for the lack of all-rounders in the team. Shastri added, “What can help is a better communication between a captain and the selector. Where the selectors are told to identify one player in the top-6 positions who can give you 4-5 overs. ‘I want someone who can bowl 4-5 overs. Find someone in the domestic cricket who can do that. Go and find that guy for me’.”

India’s head coach from 2017-2021 further claimed how there were always batsmen in the national team who wanted to focus on bowling once their batting sessions were over. Ravi Shastri said, “At the end of the day, surely there are batsmen around the country who enjoy bowling, who have that ‘keeda’ to bowl. Like Tendulkar had that ‘keeda’. If he finished the batting, he was like, ‘I don’t care’. He would take the ball and try different deliveries like off-spin, leg-spin. So that is keeda.
He added, “So there are plenty. Ajay (Jadeja) would love to bowl after he finished his batting. So you have to identify. You have 1.4 billion people man, and you are trying to tell me, keeda nahi hai kisi batsman ke paas, bowling karne ka? Kamaal hai (No batsman is interested in bowling? It’s impossible).”
