Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid revealed the reasons for the Men in Blue’s loss to England in the 5th and rescheduled Test at Edgbaston. The loss comes on the back of two successive away defeats in South Africa earlier this year, which highlights India’s inability to defend the target in the 4th innings.
Speaking with the media, Dravid shared how fitness and intensity among bowlers could be few of the potential issues to be looked upon. He said, “It’s been disappointing for us. I mean we had a couple of opportunities in South Africa as well and here as well. I just think it’s something we need to look at, something we need to probably work on.”
The head coach added, “We have been very good at that over the last few years, in terms of taking wickets and winning those Test matches. But, yeah, we haven’t been able to do that over the last few months. It could be a variety of factors: it could be maybe we just need to maintain that intensity, maintain that level of fitness, or maintain that level of performance right through a Test match.”
India has now failed to defend their target in three successive tests. The first two came during India’s tour to South Africa. The Men in Blue failed to defend 240 in Johannesburg and 212 in Cape Town, which is followed up by the 378 against England at Edgbaston.

Dravid shared that inconsistency among batters to play well in the third innings has been a cause of worry. He also went on to reveal how he plans to deal with the matter and get in touch with the national selectors for the same. “There is so much of cricket that we aren’t having any time to reflect. But we will certainly try and reflect on this performance. We have to reflect on why we aren’t able to bat well in the third innings of a Test match and why we aren’t able to take 10 wickets in the fourth innings.”
The Men in Blue are set to play the remaining six matches of the World Test Championship cycle in the subcontinent. Dravid spoke how he, coaches, and the selectors plan to sit down to get back on the winning ways. He said, “Now the next six Test matches are in sub-continent (two in Bangladesh and four in India), and our focus will be on those remaining games but obviously, coaches and selectors will be sitting down to analyse this defeat. That review happens after every game and so when we next travel to SENA land, we are well equipped to deal with it.”
