Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid opened up to Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra during a podcast. The former cricketer went on to speak that he managed his mental energy which helped him represent India for a long period.
Dravid shared how he used to spend a lot of time trying to switch off from the game when he was not playing. The Indian head coach emphasized that he could never be someone like Virender Sehwag. He goes on to explain himself speaking how the former Indian opener found it easy to switch off from the game.
The 49-year-old was very candid during his talks with Abhinav Bindra, the Olympic gold medalist in a podcast, He was quoted saying, “If I look back on my career, that..managing my energy, more of my mental energy was the real game-changer in terms of longevity in my career and terms of performance. “
Dravid added, “I used to expend a lot of energy, even when I was not playing, thinking about my game, maybe reflecting on it, or worrying about it. In time I kind of learned that was not necessarily actually not helping my sport or helping me play better. I needed to refresh and almost find a life outside of cricket.”
The Indian team head coach further said, “I was still always never going to be like Virender Sehwag, who found it much easier to switch off because of his personality outside of the game. I was never going to get to that level. But certainly, I started recognizing the red flags.”

He also shared that, “I knew I needed to find a way to switch it off but it was the mental side of the thing that you need to help yourself. It came down to you recognizing that this was as important to you as those extra hours in the gym and practice sessions.”
Dravid is currently with the Indian cricket team for their ongoing tour to the West Indies. The Men in Blue have won the ODI series by a 2-0 margin and will look to register a whitewash against the Caribbean outfit. Later on, they are set to take on West Indies in a 5-match upcoming T20I series.
