Virat Kohli’s form has been the talk of town in the Indian cricket fraternity since the start of the year. The former Indian team captain has been put on the spot due to his struggles with bat while many question his position in the team for the Asia Cup. Former India wicket keeper-batter Parthiv Patel has shared his thoughts on his fellow RCB teammate. He has claimed that the 33-year-old is likely to open the innings for India at the 6-nation tournament, later this month.
Patel is confident of Kohli returning to the Indian team set up after a big break from international cricket and see the fellow batter open the innings in Asia Cup. It would not be the first time to see Kohli open the innings as he has done it for the Men in Blue as well as for RCB. Patel shared how opening the batting will give Kohli a chance to unleash himself.
Speaking during a discussion on Cricbuzz, Parthiv Patel explained, “I would want Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to open. I want Kohli to open, so that he can just go out and unleash himself. He’s taken a break, but we all know there’s no shortage of ability in his batting style.”
He added: “As an opener, you start the game at 0-0. Whereas at No.3, you have to play according to the situation. Kohli can play the way he wants and can still play at a strike rate of 170, and if two wickets have fallen early, he can also play at 130.”

Virat Kohli has opened the innings eight times for India in T20Is so far. He has amassed 278 runs as an opener for the Men in Blue while boosting a strong average of 39.71. Parthiv Patel also goes on to add how Virat Kohli won’t be under a lot of pressure when he plays for Indian adding how the batter prefers to bat as a opener in the shortest format of the game.
Parthiv Patel said, “You want Kohli to play as freely as he can. There’s no pressure on him and he doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone. He’s already scored 70 hundreds and has scored plenty of runs. All his runs and his big knocks have come as an opener in the IPL in 2016, 2017 and 2018. That’s the position that he likes and he likes to go out there and play an attacking brand of cricket.”
