England captain Ben Stokes has announced that Jamie Overton will make his Test debut against New Zealand. The English all-rounder is all set to replace James Anderson with the speedster ruled off the Headingley clash due to an ankle injury.
Speaking with the media during the pre-match press conference, Stokes was quoted by Sky Sports saying “Unfortunately, Jimmy’s not pulled up as much as we’d like to so Jamie Overton is going to make his debut this week. It’s unfortunate for Jimmy, but we’ve got a massive test against India coming up as well. I’m not too sure how serious it is to be honest. He’s just got a bit of a puffy ankle.”
Anderson played a crucial role for England in the ongoing Test match against the Kiwis claiming 11 wickets in the first two Tests. However, the rest will be crucial for him with England hoping to have the veteran pacer fit for the one-off test match against India in Birmingham.

England will not miss the services of Anderson in this game as they head into the clash after clinching the series following their wins in the first two Test matches. The Three Lions will be hopeful of completing a whitewash at Leeds and gaining some positive momentum ahead of their clash against India.
Questions were also raised on the fitness of the English captain after Stokes did not train due to illness on Tuesday. The 28 year old’s inclusion in the playing XI is the only change England have made for the Test match against New Zealand. Overton’s debut sees him being rewarded for his fantastic performances for Surrey in the County Championship this season. He ended up taking 21 wickets while recording speeds in excess of 145 kmph on a consistent basis.
