Unlike international cricket, which requires year-round travel, rigorous training, and frequent multi-format commitments, the IPL lasts for only about two months annually. This shorter duration allows ageing players to maintain fitness specifically for T20 cricket without enduring the physical and mental grind of international tours. This article talks about the 10 oldest cricketers to have played in the Indian Premier League.

10. Rahul Dravid – 40 Years, 133 Days

Rahul Dravid was an Indian professional cricketer who played for two teams in the Indian Premier League, namely the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Rajasthan Royals. Dravid made his last appearance for the Rajasthan Royals on 6th October 2013, in a Champions League T20 game between the Rajasthan Royals and the Mumbai Indians. Dravid was 40 years and 133 days old during this game, making him one of the oldest players to play for an IPL team. Rahul Dravid came in at number eight and only managed to make one run in two balls in his last game for the Rajasthan Royals.

9. Faf du Plessis – 40 Years, 315 Days

Faf du Plessis is a South African cricketer and one of the only players on this list who is still an active player, making him one of the oldest players in the Indian Premier League. Du Plessis has played for various IPL franchises throughout his career, including the Chennai Super Kings, Rising Super Supergiant, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Capitals. Faf du Plessis played his latest IPL game on 24th May 2025 in the game between the Delhi Capitals and the Punjab Kings, doing so aged 40 years and 315 days. The South African managed to score 23 runs in 15 balls, and Delhi Capitals beat the Punjab Kings.

8. Adam Gilchrist – 41 Years, 186 Days

Adam Gilchrist was an Australian professional cricketer who played in the Indian Premier League from 2008 to 2013. Out of these six seasons, he spent the first three seasons playing for Deccan Chargers while the final three seasons playing for the Kings XI Punjab. Adam Gilchrist played his final game in the Indian Premier League on 18th May 2013. He was 41 years and 186 days old during this game, making him one of the oldest cricketers in IPL history. Adam Gilchrist only managed to score five runs in seven balls in his final IPL game, but MI were unable to chase the score down, and Kings XI Punjab ended up winning the game.

7. Shane Warne – 41 Years, 249 Days

Shane Warne was an Australian professional cricketer known as the ‘Spin King’ who was regarded as one of the best bowlers of all time. He played for just one team in the entirety of his Indian Premier League career, which was Rajasthan Royals. He joined them in 2008 and stayed with them till 2012, but his last appearance for them came on 20th May 2011 in the game between the Mumbai Indians and the Rajasthan Royals. Warne ended up picking Rohit Sharma’s wicket in his final IPL game and helped the Rajasthan Royals win the game. Shane Warne was 41 years and 249 days old during this game, making him the 7th oldest player in IPL history.

6. Chris Gayle – 42 Years, 7 Days

Chris Gayle was a West Indian professional cricketer who is widely regarded as one of the biggest hitters in IPL history. He was known for his aggressive playstyle and holds the record for the highest individual score in Indian Premier League history. Chris Gayle played his final IPL game when he was 42 years and seven days old. This was a game between the Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians, which took place on 28th September 2021. However, Chris Gayle only managed to score one run in four balls in that game, and Mumbai Indians ended up chasing the Punjab Kings’ target and winning the game.

5. Imran Tahir – 42 Years, 29 Days

Imran Tahir was a South African professional cricketer who played in the Indian Premier League from 2014 to 2016 and from 2018 to 2021. His first stint in the IPL came when he played for the Delhi Daredevils. Tahir did not end up playing in the 2017 edition of the Indian Premier League, but he was bought by the Chennai Super Kings in 2018. Tahir played for CSK from 2018 to 2021 and made his final appearance for the franchise in the game between the Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bangalore on 25th April 2021, aged 42 years and 29 days. Tahir ended up picking up two wickets while conceding just 16 runs in his final IPL game.

4. Muttiah Muralitharan – 42 Years, 35 Days

Muttiah Muralitharan was a Sri Lankan professional cricketer who played as a Right-arm off-break spinner throughout his career. Muralitharan played for just three teams during his IPL career, playing for the Chennai Super Kings from 2008 to 2010, for the Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011 and for the Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2012 to 2014. Muttiah Muralitharan was 42 years and 35 days old when he played his final IPL game, doing so in the game between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Bangalore on 22nd May 2014. Muralitharan failed to pick a single wicket in his two overs, and the Royal Challengers Bangalore ended up losing the game against KKR.

3. MS Dhoni – 43 Years, 322 Days

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is an Indian professional cricketer and one of the only two players on this list who are still actively playing. MS Dhoni has yet to retire from IPL and played his latest game for the Chennai Super Kings on 25th May 2025 in the game between the Chennai Super Kings and the Gujarat Titans. The legendary Indian wicket-keeper batsman was 43 years and 322 days during this game, and while MS Dhoni did not end up batting, the Chennai Super Kings played very well and set a target of 231 for GT to try and chase down, something they were unable to do and CSK ended up winning the game.

2. Pravin Tambe – 44 Years, 219 Days

Pravin Tambe played his final game in the Indian Premier League on 14th May 2016 in the game between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Gujarat Lions. He was 44 years and 219 days old during this game. Tambe started his career with the Rajasthan Royals, playing for them from 2013 to 2015 before moving to Gujarat Lions when RR got banned. He played for GL in the 2016 edition of the Indian Premier League before deciding to retire. Praveen Tambe bowled and batted in his very last game, conceding 25 runs in two overs without picking up a wicket and also scoring seven runs. However, the Gujarat Lions ended up losing the game by 144 runs.

1. Brad Hogg – 45 Years, 92 Days

Brad Hogg was an Australian professional cricketer who played in the Indian Premier League from 2012 to 2013 and from 2015 to 2016. His first stint in the IPL came when he played for the Rajasthan Royals. Hogg did not end up playing in the 2014 edition of the Indian Premier League, but he was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2015. Hogg played for KKR from 2015 to 2016 and made his final appearance for the franchise in the game between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Gujarat Lions on 8th May 2016, aged 45 years and 92 days. Hogg ended up picking up one wicket while conceding just 19 runs in his final IPL game.
