Nikos Karelis started his football journey by joining the youth academy of the Greek professional football club Ergotelis. Karelis started training with the men’s team at age 14 and signed his first professional contract with the club at the age of 15. He made his debut on 20th April 2008, on the final day of the 2007/08 Greek Super League. Despite being so young, the player’s talent was recognised very quickly by both his club and various prospective clubs from around the world.
Karelis drew the attention of Premier League club Arsenal and was invited to London to take part in a ten-day trial. He joined Arsenal’s under-16s and travelled with them to Italy to take part in the Atalanta u16s Cup Tournament. Karelis scored two goals for the Gunners and made a strong impression, helping Arsenal win the cup and beating Juventus in the final on penalties. Although the club were very impressed with the player, a move to the Premier League never ended up materialising for the Greek star.
Nikos Karelis played for Ergotelis from 2007 to 2012 before signing with Russian Premier League side Amkar Perm after Ergotelis got relegated. However, his stay with them was very short, and he returned home to join the Greek football club Panathinaikos in 2013. He represented them for three seasons and made 114 appearances for them in all competitions. After multiple attempts, Belgian professional football club Genk managed to get their hands on Karelis.

Genk signed the Greek star on 12th January 2016 on a three-and-a-half-year contract. After representing them for three seasons, he was sent out on loan to PAOK. Once his loan deal with PAOK ended, so did his contract with Genk, and neither club decided to sign him, making him a free agent. On 22nd August 2019, the English Championship side Brentford decided to sign the free agent and offered him a one-year deal with an option for another year. However, in October 2019, he suffered a serious injury and was released at the end of the season after a difficult recovery process.
Nikos Karelis had a short stay with ADO Den Haag in the 2020/21 season before joining Panetolikos in 2021. He represented them across four seasons before joining Mumbai City FC on 11th July 2024. He signed a one-year contract until the end of the 2024/25 season. It is with the help of these professional contracts that he has amassed a good net worth through the years, as they have been his primary source of income. His exact net worth, however, is not public information and will be updated if more news comes to light.

Nikos Karelis signed his latest contract with Indian Super League (ISL) side Mumbai City FC on 11th July 2024. He has signed a one-year contract with the club, which will expire at the end of the 2024/25 season. However, given the start to the season he has had, it is likely that his contract will be extended beyond the end of the current season. He is currently the third-highest scorer in the league and has been playing brilliantly for the club.
Karelis has very recently signed his contract with Mumbai City FC, and his contract details have not yet been made public. His contract will probably not be too exuberant, and his performances for the club may end up in him getting a longer and improved contract. The players seem to be very comfortable at the club and have been playing brilliantly. It would be very surprising if Mumbai City FC decided to let Karelis go and not extend his contract at the end of the season.
