Nikhil Poojary played for several youth academies as he tried breaking into the first team and getting his first professional contract. He played for Ryan FC, Dodsal FC (rebranded as Mumbai Tigers Football Club), Mumbai Football Club, and East Bengal Club. While at East Bengal, the talented youngster got a chance to prove himself and managed to get his first-ever professional contract.
The Indian defender stayed at East Bengal between 2016 and 2018. He made 14 appearances for them, which was a good start to his career. In fact, in 2017, when the player was just 21 years old, he received his first call-up from India. Nikhil Poojary ended up making two appearances for the Indian Football Team in 2017.
After his time with East Bengal ended, Poojary joined Indian Super League side Football Club Pune City. He spent just one season with them, and in 2019, the club was dissolved. After a controversy involving the club and Chennai City FC player Nestor Gordillo came to light, FC Pune was banned from participating in any AFC tournaments for two years. The new owners decided to dissolve the club, move their operations to Hyderabad, and start a team called Hyderabad FC.

Nikhil Poojary followed the new owners to Hyderabad FC. After FC Pune City was dissolved, Poojary joined Hyderabad FC. This is when the best and longest stint in his career came. The Indian defender played for The Nizams from 2019 to 2024. During this time, he made 79 league appearances for the club, establishing himself as one of the first-team players and reserving a spot for himself in the starting 11. He even won the ISL title with the club in the 2021-22 season. In 2024, Nikhil Poojary left Hyderabad FC and joined Bengaluru FC. He has started the 2024 season strongly for Bengaluru FC, regularly playing games for the club.

The Indian defender’s international career started in 2017. While he was not a first-team player for India yet, it was a very good start. He made eight appearances for his nation in three years. However, after this stint, the defender hit a rough patch in his international career. The Indian star used to play as a winger during this time and soon decided to shift to the right-back position.
Nikhil Poojary was not called up for India in 2020, 2021, or 2022, but the footballer kept his head down and worked even harder to get his place back. His transition to right-back helped him become a more versatile option, and in 2023, he was called up once again. This turned out to be his best year with Team India. The defender made 15 appearances in 2023 and became a mainstay in the starting lineup.
The star has had several professional contracts in his career. His most recent contract is with Bengaluru FC, which will see him stay at the club until 2028. These professional contracts, combined with brand deals and investments, have helped Nikhil Poojary accumulate a tidy sum of money. While his exact net worth is not public knowledge, it can be estimated that he has already accumulated a good amount of money, and his new contract at Bengaluru FC will only help boost his net worth even further.
Nikhil Poojary spoke about joining Bengaluru FC. He said:
“I am delighted at joining a club that has set the benchmark in Indian football on so many fronts, in just ten years of its existence. I did have a few offers to choose from, but the BCF project and the way they want to go about things is what made the decision easier for me. I had extensive chats with the management and the coach, and I feel this club is where I can help create an impact and build on my potential.”
“I have come up against BFC on many occasions in the past, and have always admired the atmosphere the fans bring to the Kanteerava. It’s going to be nice to play for, and in front of them.”
