Liverpool, having already gotten knocked out of the FA Cup and having recently been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League, wanted to make sure to get their hands on some silverware. Newcastle United, on the other hand, had not won a single trophy since 1969, and the Geordies wanted to end their 56-year trophy drought. Both teams had their reasons for winning the game and getting their hands on the silverware, but in the end, only one team could be successful and end with the trophy in their hands.

Newcastle United started the game strong, putting in a dominant display right from the start. Liverpool, on the other hand, looked like they were still thinking about their loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League and did not really have the heart to play the final after being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League. While Newcastle United dominated right from the start, they were unable to score a goal and take advantage of the docile Liverpool side till the 45th minute. It was then that Dan Burn managed to get his head on the ball during a set-piece, and his towering header found its way past Caoimhin Kelleher.

Liverpool went into half-time, being one goal down and having been dominated for almost the entirety of the first half. However, 45 minutes of football was still pending, and no one could rule out Liverpool just yet. Newcastle United decided to continue the second half right where they had left off and started the second half strongly. They kept piling on attacks on Liverpool’s defence right from the start, and this eventually caused Liverpool to break down in the 52nd minute. Tino Livramento’s cross found the head of Jacob Murphy, who headed it back towards Alexander Isak. Isak finished it first, doubling Newcastle United’s lead over Liverpool.

The task now looked too tall for Liverpool to try and do anything about it, but they kept on attacking Newcastle United’s goal, hoping to get a breakthrough and get back in the game. Despite Liverpool’s relentless efforts, it was not until the 90+4th minute that Liverpool managed to score their first goal. Harvey Elliott threaded a pass to put Federico Chiesa through on goal. Chiesa finished off the chance neatly, but the offside flag went up. However, after a VAR check, the goal was deemed to be onside, giving Liverpool a chance to come back into the game with around four minutes left in the game.
