Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia has expressed his thoughts on the growth of Indian Premier League (IPL) after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sold the IPL media rights last week. India’s apex cricket governing body conducted an e-auction while selling the broadcasting rights of the cash-rich league managing to pocket over 48,390 crore INR.
Wadia spoke how the Indian Premier League has helped cricket in reaching the global level while expecting a positive future for the tournament. He went on to explain why the tournament should be divided into two halves with each team getting opportunities to host games on home turf. Despite the addition of 2 new teams in the previous season, the organizing committee had reduced the number of matches by introducing a new format cutting it short from 90+ games to just 74 matches.

However, there is a possibility which could see IPL increase the number of match with the tournament reported to have nearly 94 games per season in the next five years. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has also shared an proposal which could see IPL get a two and a half month window in the ICC’s Future Tour Programme calendar.
PTI has quoted Wadia saying, “IPL has taken cricket to the global level. The Indian Premier League has provided the spark cricket needed and made it a global sport. It will get even bigger. Having said that, seven matches at home is way too less. It should be a minimum of 14. I see a much longer season which is long overdue.”
”If you can’t have a long season of four months, why not look at two seasons, one in India and one in a different country every year. Indians are everywhere around the world. There is huge potential for having many more games,” he added.
Wadia also did not shy away from expressing concerns over viewer fatigue as IPL’s viewership went down in the latter stages of the tournament. Addressing the issue, the Punjab Kings revealed how the ” two halves” idea could see one part of IPL being played in India and with one in another country.
He said, “At some point, we will have to factor in that also. That is where the creativity comes and we can see how leagues are run around the world. We are long away from fatigue at the moment. We will cross the bridge when we get there.”
