MS Dhoni Files Contempt Plea Against IPS Officer Sampath Kumar: On Monday, the Madras High Court scheduled a hearing on 15th June for a contempt of court petition brought by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a prominent cricketer, against IPS officer G. Sampath Kumar. The petition accuses Kumar of disrespectful comments about the Supreme Court and the High Court.
The cricketer’s senior counsel, P.R. Raman, and advocate Perumbulavil Radhakrishnan representing the IPS officer were informed by Justices M. Sundar and K. Govindarajan Thilakavadi that they would hear contempt of court petitions every Thursday, including this case.
The judges observed that the IPS officer had submitted his response to the contempt plea and had appeared in court on Monday. However, it was noted that the court had already recorded his attendance during the previous hearing on 15th December 2022, and exempted him from appearing in person for future hearings.
In 2014, Mr. Dhoni had requested that the court take action against Mr. Kumar for his derogatory comments about the judiciary in response to a ₹100 crore defamation lawsuit filed against him by the cricketer, who had been implicated in the Indian Premier League (IPL) betting scandal.
As mandated by the Contempt of Courts Act, the cricketer received permission from Advocate General R. Shunmugasundaram to file a criminal contempt of court petition. This decision was made after the Advocate General determined that the IPS officer’s comments in their written statement constituted an act of scandalizing court proceedings.
In 2021, Sampath Kumar accused Dhoni of being implicated in the betting and match-fixing controversy during the 2013 IPL games. As a result, Dhoni took legal action against a private television network and Sampath for defamation. In this regard, the ex-captain of the Indian cricket team requested the court’s help in preventing Sampath and others from making any defamatory statements about him.
