Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid) – 2023/24

Jude Bellingham is the most recent winner of the La Liga Player of the Season award. He won this award in his debut season. The midfielder joined Real Madrid on 14th June 2023. In his first season with the Los Blancos, Bellingham scored 19 goals and provided six assists, helping them win the La Liga title. He was awarded the La Liga Player of the Season award for his brilliant performances throughout the season.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona) – 2022/23

Marc-Andre ter Stegen is one of the two goalkeepers on this list who have won the La Liga Player of the Season award in the last 10 years. The German keeper played in all 38 La Liga games that season and conceded just 18 goals while keeping 26 clean sheets. His heroic performances helped Barcelona win the La Liga trophy, and ter Stegen was awarded the Player of the Season award.

Karim Benzema (Real Madrid) – 2021/22

Karim Benzema had a phenomenal 2021/22 campaign with Real Madrid. The French striker played in 32 games, scored 27 goals, and provided 12 assists in the league. He ended as the top scorer in the league that season and was just one assist off being the top assister. His brilliant campaign helped Real Madrid win the La Liga title, and the striker was awarded the Player of the Season award for the 2021/22 season.

Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid) – 2020/21

Jan Oblak is an Atletico Madrid legend who has been with the club since 2014. One of his best-ever seasons with the club was the 2020/21 campaign. The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper played in all 38 games that season and conceded just 25 goals while keeping 18 clean sheets. His incredible performance in goal helped his team win the La Liga trophy, and Jan Oblak was awarded the Player of the Season award.

Karim Benzema (Real Madrid) – 2019/20

Karim Benzema won his first La Liga Payer of the Season award in the 2019/20 season. The French striker stepped up for the Los Blancos after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure and became their key man. He made 37 appearances in the league that season and scored 21 goals while providing eight assists. This helped Real Madrid win the La Liga trophy and earned the French striker his first La Liga Player of the Season award.

 Lionel Messi (Barcelona) – 2018/19

Lionel Messi’s Player of the Season award in the 2018/19 season was his third consecutive award and the fourth one in five years. The Argentine forward enjoyed a phenomenal run of seasons during this period, but this season marked his last ever La Liga Player of the Season award. He scored 36 goals and provided 14 assists that season, racking up a massive 50-goal involvement in just 34 games to help Barcelona win the La Liga title.

Lionel Messi (Barcelona) – 2017/18

The Barcelona star won his 9th La Liga Player of the Season award in the 2017/18 season. Messi made 34 appearances for Barcelona in the league that season and ended up scoring 34 goals while providing 14 assists. He finished the season as the top goal scorer and the top assister and was awarded the Player of the Season award for helping his team win the league title.

Lionel Messi (Barcelona) – 2016/17

The 2016/17 season is one of two times in the last 10 years that the La Liga Player of the Season was not from the title-winning team. Real Madrid ended up winning the league title that season, but Barcelona’s Lionel Messi was awarded the Player of the Season award. This is due to his fantastic performance in the league, which saw him score 37 goals and provide 12 assists in 34 league games, a very impressive record.

Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid) – 2015/16

Antoine Griezmann is the only other player on this list to have won the La Liga Player of the Season award despite his team having not won the league title. Griezmann was phenomenal and scored 22 goals and provided six assists that season. However, Luis Suarez would surely have felt wrong done by this decision. He ended the season with 40 goals and 18 assists and helped his team win the league title. He would have certainly thought he deserved to win the award.

Lionel Messi’s 2014/15 campaign with Barcelona was absolutely phenomenal, and the campaign is still one of the most exciting seasons in the history of the league. Barcelona ended up winning the league by just two points. Lionel Messi ended the season with 64 goal involvements (43 goals and 21 assists), while Cristiano Ronaldo ended the season with 65 goal involvements (48 goals and 17 assists).  All in all, this was an amazing campaign, and it was Lionel Messi who ended up winning the La Liga Player of the Season award.
