IPL Teams With Most Playoff Qualifications

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most popular and competitive T20 cricket leagues in the world. Every season, ten teams compete in a round-robin format during the league stage, each playing 14 matches. The top four teams on the points table qualify for the IPL Playoffs, which are essentially the knockout phase of the tournament. Qualifying for the playoffs is a sign of consistency and strength throughout the season, and you need to finish in the top four to have any kind of hope of lifting the IPL trophy. This article talks about the IPL teams that have qualified for the playoffs the most number of times.

1. Chennai Super Kings – 12 Playoff Qualifications

The Chennai Super Kings are the most successful Indian Premier League team when it comes to qualifying for the IPL playoffs. Given that Chennai Super Kings were banned for two seasons, they participated in just 16 IPL seasons. Therefore, it is simply outstanding that they have managed to qualify for the playoffs 12 out of these 16 times. Chennai Super Kings have converted five of these 12 IPL playoff qualifications into titles.

2. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 10 Playoff Qualifications

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s qualification into the IPL 2025 playoffs was confirmed when Gujarat Titans beat Delhi Capitals on 18th May 2025. This marks their 10th qualification into the playoffs of the Indian Premier League. While 10 playoffs in 18 years is a very good record, what is even more shocking is that Royal Challengers Bangalore has yet to win the Indian Premier League trophy even once as of 2025.

2. Mumbai Indians – 10 Playoff Qualifications

The Mumbai Indians are in contention to qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs once again, but their place in the knockouts has not yet been guaranteed. If Mumbai Indians manage to qualify for the playoffs, they will have made it to 11 playoffs, but as of now, they are tied with RCB, having qualified for 10 playoffs in history. Mumbai Indians have managed to convert five of these 10 IPL playoff qualifications into Indian Premier League titles.

4. Kolkata Knight Riders – 8 Playoff Qualifications

Kolkata Knight Riders have managed to qualify for the Indian Premier League playoffs in eight seasons out of the 18 they have participated in. Kolkata Knight Riders is another one of the teams that has been quite successful in the IPL and has managed to convert three of these eight qualifications into titles. This makes KKR the third most successful Indian Premier League team, after only Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

5. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 7 Playoff Qualifications

Sunrisers Hyderabad is one of the teams on this list that was not a part of the original eight teams introduced in 2008. SRH was formed later on and started competing in the Indian Premier League from the 2013 season onwards. This means that Sunrisers Hyderabad have managed to participate in a total of 13 seasons. They have qualified for the playoffs seven of these 13 seasons and have managed to convert one into victory, getting their hands on the 2016 IPL trophy.

6. Rajasthan Royals – 6 Playoff Qualifications

The Rajasthan Royals are the second team that was banned for two years alongside Chennai Super Kings, which means they have played in 16 IPL seasons as well. Out of these 16 seasons, RR have qualified for the playoffs six times and have managed to win one trophy, winning the very first edition of the Indian Premier League in 2008.

6. Delhi Capitals – 6 Playoff Qualifications

The Delhi Capitals are another team that, like the Royal Challengers Bangalore, have failed to get their hands on the IPL trophy despite making it to the playoffs many times. Out of the 18 seasons Delhi Capitals (formerly known as Delhi Daredevils) have played in, they have made it to the playoffs six different times. They are another team with contention to qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs and will hope to convert their six into seven qualifications and zero into one Indian Premier League trophy.

8. Gujarat Titans – 3 Playoff Qualifications

Gujarat Titans are one of the very newly formed teams that were introduced ahead of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League when the IPL decided to expand from eight teams to 10 teams. Despite having played in just four seasons as of now, Gujarat Titans have managed to qualify for the playoffs in three different seasons, missing out only in the 2024 season. Gujarat Titans have already managed to convert one of these qualifications into victories, getting their hands on the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League, the very first season they played in the IPL.

8. Punjab Kings – 3 Playoff Qualifications

The Punjab Kings (formerly known as the Kings XI Punjab) have surprisingly bad qualifications for the IPL playoffs, given that they are one of the original eight teams that were introduced in the Indian Premier League. Despite having participated in all 18 IPL seasons, the Punjab Kings have managed to qualify for the playoffs just three times. Out of these three times, Punjab Kings did not manage to convert even one opportunity into a trophy and remain one of the Indian Premier League teams that have yet to get their hands on an IPL trophy.

10. Lucknow Super Giants – 2 Playoff Qualifications

Lucknow Super Giants are the second team that was introduced alongside Gujarat Titans ahead of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. Despite being a very new team, they too have managed to reach the playoffs two times. However, unlike the Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants are yet to get their hands on the IPL trophy. LSG is the third and final team that is in contention to qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs, and they will hope to pip both Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals and make it into the knockout stages this year.
