Former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif spoke about BCCI’s decision to have change captains of the Men in Blue team for the Zimbabwe tour. He believes that it was a bad idea to snatch away the captaincy from Shikhar Dhawan and had it to give KL Rahul at the last minute for the three ODIs.
Earlier, Shikhar Dhawan was named as the Men in Blue skipper for the 3-match ODI series against Zimbabwe. KL Rahul, who was later declared fit and available for selection was not only included in the ODI squad last week but also handed the captaincy for the tour. It resulted in the 35-year-old opener being demoted to vice-captaincy, which Kaif feels is a sign on disrespect to the player.
Speaking with FirstPost, the former cricketer shared his thoughts on the entire situation surrounding the captaincy between KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan. Mohammad Kaif was quoted saying, “The captaincy incident was avoidable. Perhaps KL Rahul’s medical report arrived late, and there was also a miscommunication. I do not think it would have bothered KL Rahul if India had played this series under Dhawan as originally announced. But I completely agree that if someone has been named captain, he should remain so.”
The 41 year old also went on to state how Dhawan has a lot to offer to the Indian team. Mohammad Kaif goes on to question the openers’ selection in only ODIs while sharing how the Men and Blue have tasted success when Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have well together.

“Despite only playing one format for India, Shikhar Dhawan has a lot of cricket left in him. He scores a lot of runs in the IPL, and his selection for only ODIs sometimes surprises me. He is a better player who can play T20Is as well as Tests. India has been successful whenever Dhawan, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma have played well together,” Mohammad Kaif added.
India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe is set to kick start on 18th August in Harare. Both the teams head into the matches on the back of some strong performances. While the Men in Blue got the better of West Indies in white ball series, the hosts are coming on the back of a twin series win over Bangladesh.
