Mayank Agarwal has been called up to join the Indian Test team for the one-off Test match in England. The opener is all set to be a part of the Men in Blue once again after Rohit Sharma tested positive for the Covid-19. Questions hover over the availability of the Indian skipper with the 35-year-old currently in isolation. Rahul Dravid and the coaching staff will be awaiting news expecting him to recover before the Test match begins on July 1.
Earlier, Agarwal was named to be standby player for the rescheduled Test and did not travel to UK . However, he is now likely to play in the 5th Test match. With KL Rahul sidelined with injury and Sharma’s availability under question, Agarwal could walk into the playing XI and open the innings with Gill. KS Bharat, who opened for India in the warm up game against Leicestershire could also be given a shot in this one off Test.
The 31-year-old is expected to take the flight out to England on Monday. With the UK government rules not requiring Mayank Agarwal to undergo any quarantine, he will be able to link up with the Indian squad directly. It will also deem him to be available and play immediately.

The Indian opener last featured in national colours during the Test match series against Sri Lanka in March. He failed to get going in the series scoring just 59 runs in 2 games. Mayank Agarwal is now expected to feature in the 5th Test as India look to register a series win in England. The Men in Blue head into the Edgbaston Test leading the series by a 2-1 margin.
However, they take on a strong opponent with the English team firing all cylinders in red ball cricket. The Three Lions have fared well under coach Brendon McCullum with Ben Stokes at the helm. The in-form English side registered 2 back to back wins against New Zealand and are in pole position to register a 3-0 whitewash.
It remains interesting to see how the Indian test team will fare off in Birmingham with the one-off Test beginning on July 1. The Indian cricket team is also scheduled to play three One Day Internationals’ (ODI) as well as three T20I’s during their tour to England.
