Former South Africa head coach Mark Boucher has been deemed to be in the running of being the next coach of Indian Premier League side Mumbai Indians. The ex-Proteas wicketkeeper is reported to succeed Mahela Jayawardene as the new head coach of the outfit.
Earlier, Boucher was expected to be named as the head coach of SA20 league outfit MI Cape Town. However, Simon Katich has filled up that position and is accompanied by Hashim Amla as the batting coach. Mumbai Indians’ fielding coach James Pamment will work with the SA20 outfit as well with Robin Peterson named as the team’s general manager.
The former Protea coach has been viral on social media after South Africa suffered a 2-1 loss to England in the recently concluded Test series. Following the loss, Mark Boucher announced his decision to step down from his position as the national team head coach. His tenure is set to end after South Africa’s upcoming campaign at the ICC T20 World Cup.
It will be Mark Boucher’s first outing as an head coach in T20 franchise cricket as does not have any extensive coaching experience so far. His previous outing in the IPL came when he worked with Knight Riders as a wicket keeping coach during the 2016 edition of the tournament.
The 45 year old later took up the role of being the head coach of the Titans in the South African domestic circuit. After that, the men’s national team came calling for Mark Boucher who has now decided to vacate that position in over 2 months time.

Mark Boucher is expected to be seen as Mahela Jayawardene’s replacement by the IPL franchise with the former Mumbai Indians head coach taking up a broader role within the team. The Sri Lankan has been given a new role which will see him work as the global head of performance after being the head coach at Mumbai Indians since 2017. Alongside him, Zaheer Khan is given the role of global head of cricket development after serving as director of cricket operations till the last edition.
