Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in football history, which is why it is not shocking that they are responsible for some of the most expensive transfers of all time. While they are an incredibly bog club, they are known for overpaying for the players they want. All clubs around the world knew that United would be ready to overpay to secure their signings, and many clubs took advantage of this fact, overcharging them when they tried to sign their payers. 10. Angel Di Maria – £59.7 Million

Angel Di Maria signed a five-year contract with English Premier League side Manchester United on 26th August 2014. The Red Devils paid a hefty fee of £59.7 Million to bring him to the club, which was one of the most expensive transfers of all time and the highest fee ever paid by a British club at the time. While his contract was supposed to run till the summer of 2019, the transfer did not end up panning out, and the Argentine winger left the club after just one season in the Premier League.

9. Mason Mount – £60 Million

Mason Mount was signed by Manchester United on 5th July 2023 on a five-year contract with the option to extend it for a further year. The English midfielder made a name for himself while playing for Chelsea, and United decided to sign him from their fellow Premier League team. Manchester United paid an initial fee of £55 Million, with the add-ons taking the total up to £60 Million. Mason Mount is currently still playing for the club, and his contract will keep him at Old Trafford till the end of the 2027/28 season.

8. Bruno Fernandes – £68 Million

Bruno Fernandes was signed by Manchester United in the January transfer window of the 2019/20 season from Liga Portuguese side Sporting CP. They finalised the deal on 29th January 2020 for an initial fee of £47 Million with potential add-ons of £21 Million, taking the total up to £68 Million. The Portuguese star agreed to a five-and-a-half-year contract with the club. Fernandes has since become one of Manchester United’s most important players and is currently the club captain.

Casemiro made a name for himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world while representing La Liga side Real Madrid. Premier League side Manchester United became interested in signing the Brazilian star and came to an agreement with the Los Blancos on 19th August 2022. The Red Devils paid an initial fee of £60 Million for him with add-ons worth £10 Million, taking it to a total of £70 Million. Casemiro has since continued to play for them and is still a part of the Manchester United squad.

6. Rasmus Hojlund – £72 Million

Rasmus Hojlund is a Danish youngster who hopes to make a name for himself while representing Manchester United in the English Premier League. Hojlund first came into the spotlight while playing for Serie A side Atalanta. United decided to sign the talented striker and, on 29th July 2023, paid a fee of £72 Million, including add-ons, to secure his services. He was officially announced as a Manchester United player on 5th August 2023 and has continued to represent the Red Devils ever since. Holland signed a five-year deal with the club with an option of an extra year if the club chooses to trigger the extension.

5. Jadon Sancho – £73 Million

Jadon Sancho and Manchester United had a huge saga before the Premier League club finally ended up securing his services. After years of being linked to the club, the transfer finally went through on 23rd July 2021. Manchester United paid an extravagant transfer fee of £73 Million to sign the English star, and Sancho signed a five-year contract with the club with the option of extending it further. However, the transfer never worked out, and the English star is currently on loan to Chelsea, with the club having an obligation to buy after the end of the loan.

4. Harry Maguire – £80 Million

Harry Maguire is the most expensive defender in the history of football. Manchester United signed the English defender on 5th August 2019 after agreeing to pay a transfer fee of £80 Million to Leicester City. This surpassed the transfer fee of £75 Million Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk, making Maguire the most expensive defender of all time. Maguire’s career was full of ups and downs, from being berated by the fans to having a stint as the club captain, but the English defender seems to be in favour of the United fans right now.

Antony joined Manchester United on a five-year contract on 30th August 2022 from Eredivisie side Ajax. The Red Devils paid a base fee of £82 Million to sign him with further add-ons worth £4.27 Million, taking the total transfer fee up to £86.27 Million. This is the third-highest transfer fee ever paid by the club, behind only Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba. He did not have the best of starts to his Manchester United career, and the Brazilian star is currently on loan at La Liga side Real Betis, where he hopes to get his career back on track.

Romelu Lukaku is one of the most expensive transfers in Manchester United’s history. He joined the club on 10th July 2017 on a five-year contract after United agreed on a transfer fee with Everton. His performances in the Premier League for Everton caught the attention of Manchester United, and they decided to pay an initial transfer fee of £75 Million with add-ons worth £15 Million, taking the total up to £90 Million.

They agreed to pay a transfer fee of £93.5 Million to sign the French midfielder, which made him the most expensive transfer in Manchester United history, a record that stands to this day. He signed a five-year contract with Manchester United on 8th August 2016 and continued to represent them till the end of the 2021/22 season.
