Manchester City Football Club, established in 1894, has a rich history filled with legendary attackers who have left an indelible mark on the club and English football. City is one of the most prestigious clubs in England and is one of the biggest clubs in the world. They have had incredible success lately, and while most of their success is recent, they have had some very good players represent them in their long history. This article talks about the top 10 goal scorers in Manchester City’s history and which legends from the club have managed to make their way onto this list.

Who Are Manchester City’s Top 10 Goal Scorers?

9. Fred Tilson – 132 Goals

Fred Tilson was an incredible English centre-forward who played for just three clubs throughout his career. His professional career started when he made his professional debut for Barnsley in 1926. He played for Barnsley and Northampton Town, but the majority of his career was spent playing for Manchester City. He played for them from 1928 to 1938 and made a total of 273 appearances for City across all competitions. He scored 132 goals, ending his career at the club with a goals-per-game ratio of 0.48.

9. Billie Gillespie – 132 Goals

Billie Gillespie is one of the biggest legends in Manchester City’s history. He played as a centre-forward throughout his career and was a brilliant clinical striker for the Cityzens. Gillespie played for Strathclyde and Lincoln City before joining City in 1897. He continued to play for them till 1905 and became one of Manchester City’s best strikers in history. His brilliant goal-scoring ability helped him score 132 goals in 231 appearances at a goals-per-game ratio of 0.57. This makes Billie Gillespie the ninth-highest goal scorer in City’s history.

8. Tommy Browell – 139 Goals

Tommy Browell is an English striker who played for four clubs throughout his professional football career. He started his career while playing for Hull City. He played for them from 1910 to 1911 before moving to Everton. He joined Manchester City after leaving Everton but ended up retiring at Blackpool, playing for them from 1926 to 1930. Tommy Browell ended up playing for City from 1913 to 1926 and managed to end his career after becoming one of the best strikers in Manchester City’s history. Browell scored 139 goals in 247 games, ending his Manchester City career with a goals-per-game ratio of 0.56.

7. Francis Lee – 148 Goals

Francis Lee was an English professional footballer who played as a striker throughout his career. He played for three clubs throughout his career, starting his professional football career while playing for Bolton Wanderers. He played for Bolton from 1959 to 1967 before moving to Manchester City. Lee played for City at the top of the game and transformed into an incredible striker for them before moving to Derby County and playing for them from 1974 to 1976 before retiring. Francis Lee played for Manchester City from 1967 to 1974, scoring 148 goals in 330 appearances at a goals-per-game ratio of 0.45.

5. Billy Meredith – 152 Goals

Billy Meredith was an English professional outside forward who had two different stints for the Cityzens. Meredith started his career while playing for Chirk. He played for various clubs throughout his career, including Chirk, Northwich Victoria, Wrexham, Manchester City, and Manchester United. Meredith is famous for being one of the players to have played for both sides of Manchester (City and United). Billy Meredith played for City from 1894 to 1906 and from 1921 to 1924. He ended up playing in a total of 394 games for Manchester City and scored a total of 152 goals for them at a goals-per-game ratio of 0.39.

5. Joe Hayes – 152 Goals

Joe Hayes was an English professional footballer who played as an inside forward throughout his career. He played for Manchester City from 1953 to 1965 while also representing two more clubs throughout his career, namely Barnsley and Wigan Athletic. However, the majority of his domestic career was spent while playing for English Premier League side City. He made a total of 364 appearances for the club in all competitions and ended up scoring 152 goals for them at a goals-per-game ratio of 0.42. This makes Joe Hayes one of the top goal-scorers in Manchester City’s history.

4. Colin Bell – 153 Goals

Colin Bell is another legendary Manchester City player and has managed to make it on the list of top City goal-scorers throughout history despite being a midfielder. He played for three clubs throughout his career, namely Bury, Manchester City, and San Jose Earthquakes. However, it was while playing for City that he really managed to shine. He will go down in history as an incredible midfielder and is on this list simply because of his longevity. Bell ended up playing for Manchester City from 1966 to 1979 and scored a total of 153 goals for them in 501 appearances across all competitions at a goals-per-game ratio of 0.31.

3. Tommy Johnson – 166 Goals

Tommy Johnson is an English professional footballer who played as a striker throughout his career. Dixon represented various clubs throughout his career, such as Everton, Liverpool, and Darwen, but the majority of his career was spent playing for the Manchester City football club. He played for the Cityzens from 1919 to 1930 and ended up making a total of 354 appearances for them across all competitions while scoring 166 goals. This puts his goals-per-game ratio during his stint with City at 0.47. This makes Tommy Johnson the third-highest goal-scorer in Manchester City’s history.

The English footballer played as an outside left forward throughout his career and will go down in history as one of City’s best footballers of all time. He is the second-highest goal scorer in the club’s history. He started his career while representing Barnsley and played for them from 1926 to 1928 before moving to City. Brook ended up representing Manchester City from 1929 to 1939, scoring 177 goals in 494 appearances across all competitions at a goals-per-game ratio of 0.36.

Sergio Kun Aguero is arguably the biggest legend in Manchester City’s history. He is regarded as one of the best strikers of all time, and he is the top scorer in City’s long history. Aguero played for a total of four clubs, namely Independiente, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, and Barcelona. Sergio Aguero ended up playing for Manchester City from 2011 to 2021 and scored a total of 260 goals for them in 389 appearances at an impressive goals-per-game ratio of 0.67, the highest of anyone else on this list. It will be quite a while before Aguero’s record of 260 goals for Manchester City is broken by someone else.
