Manchester City is having an abysmal 2024/25 Premier League season compared to the standards they have set for themselves in previous seasons. Pep Guardiola’s side has been struggling in both attack and defence this season and has fallen from competing for the title to struggling to finish in the top four. No one expected that last year’s champions would struggle this much in a matter of just one year. This article talks about Manchester City’s fall this season and how they have gone from competing for the Premier League title to now dropping out of the top four and fighting for a spot in the UEFA Champions League next season.

Manchester City, who have played 28 games in the Premier League, now find themselves a huge 23 points behind Liverpool, who sit at the top of the table. Such a gap is not something that even a team like Manchester City can cover-up, and the title race is surely over for them. The club has now shifted its goal from the Premier League title to make sure they finish in the top four and secure a place in the UEFA Champions League under any circumstance. They dropped out of the top four after their loss to Nottingham Forest last weekend, and their place in next year’s UCL looks to be in danger.
The Cityzens have managed to get 47 points this season and currently sit 5th in the Premier League, behind Liverpool (70 points), Arsenal (55 points), Nottingham Forest (51 points), and Chelsea (49 points). The closest team to them, Chelsea, have only just managed to overtake them, and they should be the easiest team for Manchester City to displace from the top four. They will be looking to do so in the near future and regain their place in the top four.

Pep Guardiola has spoken about the club changing its goals for the season and now prioritizing finishing in the top four. Pep Guardiola said:
“Qualification for the Champions League would be a big success, but you have to win it. I want to qualify for the Champions League. It will not be good [if City misses out], but I saw what happened with other teams in the Premier League in the past. Not being in the Champions League would be a problem, but there are teams that didn’t qualify and have come back and are there. In sport, in knockout games, sometimes details make the difference, but in the Premier League, over 38 games, if you are not able to finish in the first four or five, it is because we were not good enough.”
“Liverpool was not in the Champions League one, two or three seasons ago, and look now”
Pep Guardiola says Man City not qualifying the Champions League isn’t the end of the world, but they’ll try until the last second 👀

One good news for Manchester City is that the Premier League may end up securing the fifth spot for the UCL next season, depending on the performance of English teams in Europe this season. England is currently the frontrunner to secure a fifth spot for next year, with six of their seven teams still playing in Europe. The only English team that has already been knocked out is Manchester City itself, the team that may end up profiting from the Premier League being awarded a fifth UCL slot.
Only time will tell if the Premier League end up securing a fifth spot in the UEFA Champions League, but this is not something that Manchester City can wait for. Their goal will be to finish as high as possible and secure guaranteed UCL qualification. While Liverpool, and arguably even Arsenal, seem too far from Manchester City as of now, they can certainly overtake both Chelsea and Nottingham Forest. Pep Guardiola will be sure to let his team know that although they are out of the title race, that does not mean that they can rest, as they need to try and finish as high as possible and secure UCL qualification.
