Manchester City Clinch 5th Premier League Title

It was a very delightful Sunday for Premier League team Manchester City and their die-hard fans, as the team clinched their fifth ever English Premier League title. This year, they were on a hot run right from the start, not just winning matches, but steamrolling all of their opponents and breaking goal-scoring records across competitions. It was only fair for them to win the competition. What’s more is that they’ve completed the win with 5 game weeks still to be played this season.

Manchester City Premier League titles:

  • 1936–37
  • 1967–68
  • 2011–12
  • 2013–14
  • 2017–18

This became their first EPL victory since 2014 and even though they took an unassailable lead in the first few months, their progress had slowed downed considerably in the last month or so. They were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League after losing both legs to Liverpool, and then also lost a Premier League derby game against Manchester United 2-3.

This Sunday, their title win didn’t come as a result of their own doing but rather as a result of Manchester United’s carelessness, so they should go over and thank their rivals for this. While City won their game against Tottenham 3-1, United just needed a draw to postpone City’s win for a week or more. However, United lost 0-1 at home to the team placed last on the EPL 2017/18 standings – West Bromwich Albion!

This shocking defeat put City 16 points clear of their rivals and with just 5 games to go, they would lift the trophy even if they lost all games and United had to win all of theirs. WBA beating United was such a surprising result that Man City Manager Pep Guardiola wasn’t even present, having booked a golf session with his son.

City, however, were not presented the trophy on Sunday. They will receive it the next time they step out on the pitch and 90 minutes are completed, regardless of whether they win or lose that game. In another part of the world, PSG beat Monaco 7-1 and that put them 17 points clear of anyone else on the Ligue 1 (French premier football league) table, which means they lifted their 7th Ligue 1 title.
