Gareth Southgate has announced that he will leave his position as manager of England men’s team. This comes after England lost 2-1 to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. The Englishman was appointed as the senior team’s manager on 27th September 2016. He was appointed as the interim manager after Sam Allardyce resigned. His role as a caretaker ended on 15th November, when he was appointed on a permanent basis.
England has participated in two World Cups and two Euros since Gareth Southgate took over. The manager, however, was unable to get his hands on any of these trophies. England had a good 2018 World Cup campaign, which ended after a 2-1 loss against Croatia in the semi-final. They did even better in the 2020 Euros, reaching the final and taking the lead against Italy. However, they eventually lost the game on penalties.
Gareth Southgate’s team did not do exceptionally well in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They got knocked out by France in the quarterfinals, and many expected England to part ways with the manager. However, they extended his stay till the 2024 Euros. England managed to reach the finals once again, but it was Spain that sent home the Lions trophyless this time. After this loss, Gareth Southgate decided to resign as England’s manager. This article talks about five candidates who can potentially end up being Southgate’s replacement as the England manager.

Jurgen Klopp decided to leave his role as Liverpool’s manager at the end of the 2023/24 season. He said that he had grown tired after continuously being involved https://twitter.com/PurplePanel/status/1813154587588628568with football for many years and that he needed a break. While being able to convince Klopp to become England’s manager will be extremely tough indeed, his resignation from Liverpool means that he is not contractually obligated to any other team. As international football does not take place very often, this can give Klopp a chance to stay connected to football and yet avoid being around it on a daily basis.
🚨 Thomas Tuchel wants to be the next England manager. 🏴

Thomas Tuchel recently had an excruciating period with Bayern Munich. He was appointed as Bayern’s manager on 24th March 2023. However, he was almost instantly involved with drama as it took last-day heroics to help Bayern win the league. This was followed by another tough year in the Bundesliga, and with Bayer Leverkusen putting up one of the best seasons in Bundesliga history, Bayern Munich lost the league title for the first time since the 2011/12 season. This led to Tuchel being sacked by the club despite being at the club for very little time.
The revered manager is now without a club, and England may pounce at this chance to recruit him. While he is another manager who is known for managing clubs rather than international teams after his stint at Bayern Munich, England might be able to convince him to take charge of the England men’s national team. It will be a very good replacement for Gareth Southgate if England can convince Thomas Tuchel to join.

Mauricio Pochettino has managed a series of clubs across his coaching career. He started at Espanyol and has managed Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea. His best stint came when he was the Spurs manager. He was with the club from 2014 to 2019, and despite the lack of trophies during his tenure, he is very highly rated for the way he transformed the Spurs squad. His most recent job was with Chelsea. However, after just one season, the club announced that they had mutually agreed with Pochettino to part ways.

After this surprising turn of events, Mauricio Pochettino might be ready to accept the job of becoming England’s head coach and become Gareth Southgate’s replacement. The Argentine has spent a lot of years in England and trained many players who play in the Premier League. He also has a long-standing relationship with England’s captain, Harry Kane, which is another positive for both England and Pochettino. It will be interesting to see if Pochettino decides to dip his feet into managing an international team.
🚨 🏴 Eddie Howe is likely to be the FA's top choice for the managerial role, if Southgate leaves.

Eddie Howe is the only manager on this list who is currently employed by a team. However, this does not mean that he is not one of the favourites to replace Gareth Southgate as England’s manager. While he is relatively inexperienced, he has showcased his talents at AFC Bournemouth, Burnley, and Newcastle United. Howe was appointed to replace Steve Bruce as the manager of Premier League club Newcastle United on 8th November 2021, signing a contract until the summer of 2024.
His contract, however, was extended after impressive performances at the club. However, amid interest from England, news has surfaced that Eddie Howe has a £5 Million buy-out clause in his contract. If England can convince Howe to join, they can easily trigger this clause and appoint him as the manager. This can end up being a very good choice for England, and given the likelihood of the other candidates, Howe might be the best candidate to replace Gareth Southgate.
🚨Graham Potter is the leading candidate for the England national team manager position. @PurplePanel pic.twitter.com/z01OEhRA8j

Graham Potter is the odds-on favourite to replace Gareth Southgate as England men’s team manager. Potter started his managerial career in 2008 with Leeds Carnegie. He has managed other teams, including Östersund, Swansea City, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Chelsea. He is mostly known for his success with Brighton. He helped develop a young team into a top-tier team, which gave competition to some top Premier League clubs. This is the reason he is the most likely successor to Gareth Southgate.
His time at Chelsea, however, puts a blemish on his otherwise stellar career. He was assigned as the manager in 2022 but was unable to do much with a young yet talented squad. Chelsea decided to part ways with him on 2nd April 2023 following a 2–0 loss to Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. Graham Potter has since not taken a job with any club and is free to join England if they decide to go his way.
