Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have made some expensive signings in their history. The club is not really known for paying exuberant transfer fees to sign players and usually tries sticking to very low fees. However, they have signed a few expensive players in their history, some of which have become a few of the most important players in Liverpool’s history. Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in Premier League history and has won several extremely prestigious trophies. This article talks about the 10 most expensive signings Liverpool has made in their history.

Who Are Liverpool’s Most Expensive Signings?

10. Mohamed Salah – £43 Million

Mohamed Salah is an Egyptian professional footballer who is regarded as one of the best wingers of all time. He is known for his brilliant finishing ability as well as creativity, which makes him an outstanding winger. Salah was first signed by Chelsea, but they did not end up giving him opportunities. Instead, Salah rose to prominence while playing for Fiorentina and AS Roma. In 2017, Liverpool decided to sign the talented winger, agreeing to pay a package of around £43 Million. Salah has since continued to represent the Premier League team and has become one of the most important players in Liverpool’s history.

9. Fabinho – £43 Million

Michael Olise played for the youth academies of various top clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City, but it was at Reading that he got the opportunity to make his senior debut. He soon moved to Crystal Palace, where he continued to shine, and his talent as a winger caught the eyes of some of the top clubs like Liverpool. The German club decided to sign him and completed the transfer on 7th July 2024, agreeing to pay a transfer fee of €60 Million to do so. The French winger is currently playing in his very first season for the Bundesliga club.

Cody Gakpo is a Dutch professional footballer who came into the spotlight while playing for Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven. He graduated from their youth academy and performed brilliantly for their first team. He played for PSV from 2018 to 2023, making a total of 159 appearances for the first team across all competitions. Liverpool decided to sign the Dutch winger in the January transfer window of the 2022/23 season. They paid a fee of £44.3 Million to bring the talented star to the Premier League. He made his debut for Liverpool on 7th January 2022 and has continued to play for Liverpool ever since.

7. Diogo Jota – £45 Million

Diogo Jota’s first big team was Atletico Madrid, which he joined in 2016. However, he never ended up playing for Atletico Madrid; instead, he spent two seasons on loan, his first season at Porto and his second season at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves decided to sign him permanently, and this is where he really came into the spotlight. He continued to perform well, and soon Liverpool came calling. They agreed to pay a transfer fee of £45 Million, including all add-ons, to bring the talented Portuguese star to Liverpool. Diogo Jota has continued to represent Premier League side Liverpool ever since.

6. Luis Diaz – £50 Million

Luis Diaz played for Barranquilla and Atletico Junior, representing the two teams between 2016 and 2019. However, it was after joining the Portuguese side, Porto, that he came into the spotlight. Diaz signed with Porto on 10th July 2019 and showcased his talent for the entire world to see. He represented them for around three seasons before Liverpool decided to make a move for him in the January transfer window of the 2021/22 season. They paid a fee of £50 Million to bring the Colombian star to the Premier League. He has represented Liverpool in four seasons ever since, making 136 appearances in all competitions for them across all competitions.

5. Naby Keita – £59 Million

Naby Keita played for various clubs like Horoya, Istres, and Red Bull Salzburg before he was signed by Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. He transformed into a brilliant midfielder while playing for Leipzig and attracted attention from various top clubs around the world. Keita played with Leipzig till 2018 but struck a deal to join Liverpool on 28th August 2017. The total package could rise up to a total of £59 Million. Keita played for Liverpool across five seasons but has spent the last two seasons on loan. He spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Werder Bremen and is currently on loan at Ferencvaros.

4. Dominik Szoboszlai – £60 Million

Dominik Szoboszlai started his professional career at FC Liefering. The Hungarian star rose to prominence while playing for Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig. Szoboszlai made 83 appearances for Salzburg and 91 appearances for Leipzig, catching the eye of some of the top clubs in the world. Liverpool decided to make a move for the Hungarian star ahead of the 2023/24 season. They triggered his release clause worth £60 Million to bring Dominik Szoboszlai to the Premier League. He is currently playing in their second season at Liverpool and has made 81 appearances for them already.

3. Alisson Becker – £66.8 Million

Alisson Becker started his career while playing for Internacional. He played with them till 2016 before he was signed by Serie A side AS Roma. Alisson received praise for his performance throughout the 2017/18 season, in which he kept a total of 22 clean sheets.  His performances caught the attention of Liverpool, who decided to pay a huge fee of £66.8 Million to sign him on 19th July 2018, making him the most expensive goalkeeper of all time. Alisson has since continued to represent Premier League side Liverpool and has made a total of 288 appearances for them in all competitions across seven seasons.

2. Virgil van Dijk – £75 Million

Virgil van Dijk started his senior football career while playing for Groningen, after which he transferred to Celtic. However, it was while playing for Premier League side Southampton that Virgil van Dijk really came into the spotlight. His huge, dominating figure and incredible defensive skills made him a brilliant centre-back. Liverpool signed the talented defender on 27th December 2017, agreeing to pay a fee of £75 Million to Southampton to bring the talented defender to Liverpool. Virgil van Dijk has represented Liverpool across eight seasons since then and is currently the club captain. He has already made a total of 307 appearances for Liverpool.

Darwin Nunez started his career at the Uruguayan club Penarol, after which he moved to the Spanish side of Almeria. Nunez was then signed by Portuguese side Benfica, a club known for developing talent. They finally agreed to a package worth a maximum of £85 Million to bring the talented Uruguayan striker to the Premier League. They completed the deal on 13th June 2022, and Nunez has continued to play for them ever since, making 132 appearances for them across all competitions.
