Former Indian star Kris Srikkanth has gone on to question BCCI’s decision on the recently announced India squad for the highly anticipated T20 World Cup. The upcoming ICC event is all set to take place in Australia starting on 16th October with the Super 12 stage kicking off on 22nd October.
The former chief selector of the Men in Blue has not shied away from expressing his thoughts on the selected squad and questioned Mohammed Shami‘s exclusion from the T20 World Cup member list. Kris Srikkanth spoke about the speedster’s absence from the team and shared his thoughts.
Shami has been a regular feature in the national T20I team before being overlooked after the ICC T20 World Cup in 2021. In his absence, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has included two fast bowlers in the likes of Harshal Patel & Arshdeep Singh. They are set to join forces with Bhuvneshwar Kumar alongside Jasprit Bumrah, who will speedster the pace battery and make a comeback to the team after missing the Asia Cup 2022 due to an injury.
Speaking on Star Sports, Kris Srikkanth shared how the speedster could have been a solid asset to the national team in Australia with the pacer boasting a high-arm action and ability to extract some bounce off the pitch. He said, “Mohammed Shami should have been there. You are playing in Australia. Shami can get bounce in Australia, he has a high-arm action. He can get the ball going away from the left-hander, going into the right-hander. In the first 3 overs, he can get 2-3 wickets.”
“Why was he not picked? You have Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshal Patel good. As far as I am concerned, the 4th medium pacer should have Mohammed Shami. He has done very well in Australia all the time. How can you say Shami is not in the scheme of things. He is a very good bowler. Look at his IPL records. Fantastic, he has got the early wickets. You need early breakthroughs, right? Who will give it for you?,” Kris Srikkanth added.
BCCI would be hoping that the decision to include Shami in the bystanders list doesn’t backfire with the Indian Cricket Team having a point to prove at the upcoming ICC events. Rohit Sharma’s men are touted to be amongst the favorites to walk away with the T20 World Cup title. However, they had a poor outing at the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022 after being eliminated in the Super 4 stages of the tournament.
