Young speedster Arshdeep Singh became the talk of the town after the 23-year-old dropped Asif Ali’s catch during the last stages of India’s Asia Cup clash against Pakistan on Sunday. The events unfolded during the 2nd Super 4 match of the Asia Cup 2022.
The Rohit Sharma-led Indian Cricket Team posted 181/7 on the board riding on a half century by Virat Kohli alongside a solid opening partnership between KL Rahul and the Indian skipper. Later, Pakistan relied on Mohammad Rizwan with the opener scoring his 3rd back-to-back fifty in the tournament while Mohammad Nawaz scored 42 off 20 balls. Khushdil Shah and Asif Ali went on to snatch the game away and help Pakistan register a 5-wicket win.
One of the most talked about points pf the game came during the 18th over of the second innings. Ravi Bishnoi bowled to Asif Ali, who hit it in the air as Arshdeep Singh dropped a simple catch. The missed opportunity by the left-arm pacer proved to be very costly as the Pakistan star made most of it and helped his side win the match.
After the match, the young Indian pacer received heavy abuse on social media for dropping a catch. Later, Arshdeep Singh’s Wikipedia page was tampered with. It saw an unregistered user replace the words “India” with “Khalistan” at several places on the player’s profile. The 23-year-old was being associated with a separatist group that calls for “Khalistan” with the text reading that the pacer is appointed to play for the “Khalistani national cricket team”.

According to a report in India Today, a Pakistani link was found in Arshdeep Singh’s Wikipedia page tampering incident. The news paper has quoted the incident stating as “The IP address that was used to edit Indian cricketer Arshdeep Singh’s Wikipedia page was the same IP address that edited out references to Pakistani military and Parvez Musharaf,”
India Today’s report further states, “In 2014, the same IP was used to edit UAE Wikipedia page that had critical references to the Pakistani military. The IP address was used yesterday (September 4) to insert Khalistani reference into Arshdeep’s Wikipedia page.”
Citing these actions, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has summoned Wikipedia executives to get an explanation about the vandalization on Arshdeep Singh’s Wikipedia page. They are reported to be wanting to learn on how such fake information was available on Arshdeep Singh’s page which linked the young speedster to a separatist Khalistani movement.
