Former English skipper Joe Root has regained the top spot in the latest ICC rankings. The right-handed batter has toppled Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne to be the highest-ranked Test batter in the world. The English star has been on a roll in 2022 managing over four centuries this calendar year. He also recorded his 27th Test hundred during England’s’ latest over New Zealand at Trent Bridge. Root recently breached the 10,000 Test runs landmark, becoming the second ever English batter to do so which sees him leap frog Labuschagne to be the number 1 ranked batter in Test Cricket.

The 31-year-old finds himself sitting on the top spot in ICC ranking with a total of 897 rating points against his name. Labuschagne, on the other hand sits on the 2nd place, just five points away from matching the Englishman’s tally.
Root is currently in a part of the English team that’s hosting New Zealand. He has the opportunity to extend his lead on the top with his team set to play one remaining Test against the Kiwis which will be followed up with a one-off Test against India and three Test matches against South Africa in the upcoming months.

Labuschagne, on the other hand, will be touring Sri Lanka with the Aussies taking on the islandic nation in two Test matches during their World Test Championship series. He will be eager to regain his position right on the top. But he will have a difficult time in doing so, given the number of Test matches, Root has coming up.
